Anybody have any luck with hybrids? Ive been wanting to breed some hybrids, any experiences and possible pairups, i know there are several cichlid hybrids out there. Please share your knowledge...

All I can suggest is that you research before buying because some hybrids cannot reproduce.

all right, how about a convict/firemouth or dempsey/firemouth? Can this be done?

Red devil/Trimaculatus usually works pretty easy, Seen Texas/Jacks before...very pretty, Synspylum/Texas that I had did it....pretty cool looking when they got to about 2 in., and I'm sure a ton of other things can be done. Just have a big enough tank and a bunch of diff. stuff and something will probably spawn in time. Don't let anyone discourage you either....cuz some of those "not possible" pairs do happen.....

I have about 30 convict X green terror that a lady brought to me at work (at a pet store) that resulted from a 7"male green terror and a 4-1/2" female convict in a 30 gal. I have also seen ram (Microgeophagus Ramirezi) X angel fish (Pterophyllum Scalare) for sale.

i have bean breeding ciclids for a few years and find that body shape is the most important factor. like mixing a dovii with a salvini, or a jack and a blua acara because they recognize each other better. as far as convicts and firemouths if there are both m and f they will always pair off with their own kind. i find a smaller male larger female works best to keep him from killing her.

I did have a guppy x molly hybrid once... she reached two inches, had a balloon belly ( She was not preggers.) and that's the only hybrid I have... I'm seeing if my firemouths will pair up with my convicts... both firemouths are males, both convicts are females.

A friend of mine had a breeding pair of what he claimed, no, swore to be convict/oscar mix. He named the breed Ripper's! He had them for a couple years. I could definatly see the convict in them. But had trouble seeing the oscar in them. They were definatly crossed with something. Very cool looking. Also very large and extreamly agressive! They did however retain the convict's habbit to breed like rabbits.
Also I agree with the person that mentoned Flower horns. The are easy to breed extremly hardy and in my opinion on of the most stunning fish out there today! I am currently breeding three seperate pure strains of this fish. Nothing brings me greater joy! Good luck with the fire mouth deal, that would be something to see!

I bet those were "balloon rams" you saw and not Pterophyllum var. x M. ramirezi. Balloon rams aren't hybrids, just ugly little genetic wonders like any balloon molly.

hey why not just try for electric blue dempseys. ive done that and its super easy. get a female manny and a male dempsey at about 8" each give them the right requirements and quick cure the eggs. instant money makers!!

You didn't miss much. They're nice but not better than one or the other.

The sad part about the fish pictured above was that the particular shop they were at was selling them as "Umbees" and for the retail umbee pricetag. :shakehead
Folks actually bought them :( . I think they might still have one left.

I didn't breed them so I'm only guessing but they looked like straight Sal x Tex. I didn't think they displayed any JD traits at all.
