I read an article on CNN about attempts to replace coca production in Peru with fish farming. They plan to try and increase stocks of something called a Paiche. It looks like an arapaima gigas to me.

Is this a gigas, and secondly, what do you guys think about this plan to farm an endangered fish???

commercial fish farming isnt necessarily great. Wouldnt make much of a difference on the wild population

yeah thats a gigas.

I think its a great idea if they are planning on releasing them into the wild.

Paiche is the spanish vernacular name for Arapaima gigas in several south american countries. It's more well known common name of 'pirarucu' is actually the word 'pirate' in Portuguese.
