Wow, very nice tank! Very colourful fishes too. It's the same with my Tang tank. Even the shell dwelling Brevis all come out of their shells and go to the surface awaiting food!

Here's my latest addition. Cyprichromis "Leptosoma Jumbo" Kigoma.

like >>this<< (http://www.canon.de/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/eos_systemblitzgeraete/speedlite_580ex/index.asp) for example :naughty:

Picked up my Julidochromis Transcriptus yesterday. I had to rearrange the right side of the tank and build a little mountain out of small rocks. The main cavern is not that small though as the Brevis and Daffodil immediately went over to check it out after I was done.

When I put Julis into the tank, most immediately went to the rocks but some went to the open where the shells were. Well, the current inhabitants didn't waste anytime bullying them. The all took turns chasing the new guys around. :D I'm impressed with the Julis though. The largest one is probably 1.5" but they can move quick! After a few minutes of these the bullies got bored and started chasing each other again. This tank is getting very interesting with a lot of Attitude. :D On to the pics!

Hanging out in the safe zone. A triangle zone bounded by a driftwood on the left, the rocks on the right and the glass in front.

This one stayed around the shells but found a better place this morning.
http://gunnerx.ca/pics/120/P5048299.jpg

I think I found a good mix of Tangs that's quite entertaining right now. The more they are in the tank the more they seem to get used to each other. They tolerate each other yet know the limits of what they can do. :D I'm having fun.

Thanks! I originally asked for 6 of them and I got 11!! 4 of them are still Juvies though but they seem to stick with each other which is good. The juvies found a great hiding spot where the other's can't find them.

Thanks, Liz & Mike. Mike, i was keeping 5 colonies of Tropheus and sold 3 groups to make room for other fish that would allow me to expand my photo hobby. Here's someone from Malawi. A. Baenschi.

Ps. Polit. Scrappy little mbuna. You can see he's missing good chunks of his lips from constant jawlocking in the first pic. It's funny though how none of the males were killed. They just scrapped a lot. :D

Gerry,

I have a colony of polits and the two males definitely fight with each other more than most mbuna. I have never seen mbuna that will fight for 20-30 minutes straight then the same one always loses..... yet he comes back for more again and again. They don't seem to be doing much damage except the scraped up lips though.

So I tired geting a good shot of my lwanda male. He is looking great. But sadly he doesn't like the camera. While doing that I got some other good shots off though. (Sadly I didn't clean the tank well enough before hand so some shots aren't quite nice enough.)

Thanks for the compliments. I am going up to DC on Monday for 9 days so lets hope all the fish stay well. (The last trip I took I lost ~6 fish, sadly 4 were EBJD).

The only annoying part about the 250 is that my albino T.R. lost almost all his color. I hope he gets it back soon but I may just end up pulling him if he keeps so subdued. (Almost all the other guys have gained color since the move.)

Thanks. They killed the smaller yellow lab in the first picture last week. It's now 1 yellow lab and 3 neolamprologus tetracanthus... These guys are here in my office. I want a large tank for home that I can raise a good community in... I also yearn for a camera that will give me f22 with a nice macro. I took these with my Canon A720IS point and shoot on manual focus in Aperture priority maxed out at f8.0. Can't beat this little camera for under $200 with a 4gb SDHC card... http://ebassist.com/forum/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

i have a canon power shot s5is with DSL settings and i use the point and shoot all the time.. if you know all the settings and for manual thats great..i read the book and go :nilly::nilly::confused::confused:and then put it back on automatic.. beautiful fish, that happens once in awhile when you get a timid lab.. then they all seem to kill it from stress. :( great pics.. if you know what i should set my camera on let me know!!

I looked up your camera and it looks quite nice, unfortunately it doesn't seem to have a manual focus available and the maximum aperture is f3.5, so your depth of field is pretty narrow for the focus. One of the big reasons that the other pictures in here look so spectacular is that their camera and lens combinations allow their sharp focal range to fall within a 3-4 inch tolerance while mine is about an inch and yours is more like half an inch. A narrow focal depth of field makes getting sharp pictures very iffy on a moving target.
I would say your best bet is to use a tripod, keep your flash at an angle to the glass so you don't get a reflection and set your timer to 2 seconds or so. Then just take lots and lots of pictures and post the ones that come out sharp... digital film is cheap and with rechargeable batteries and time on your hands, it costs next to nothing to take thousands of pics for those couple of special ones...

My 2 cents... is great info.. thanks very much...what do you think about getting added lense and or flash attachment..do you think that would make a differnce ..my camera costs me almost $400 and i just got it so i am not ready to toss it in.. but if i added to it might make a difference... i will definitly try using the tripod more and ..i do take lots and lots of pictures haha.. only a few are seen..:D

Hey Red Devil did you ever get any vids going? I am tempted to try to get some morning shots of one of my tanks, but well I am not really a morning person. (And well the tanks isn't africans.) But it looks amazing with the sun beams.

Anyways I tend not to try to up anything bigger than ~15 mb for vids, but well even those can take a half an hour depending on the place/time. (And I hopefully will be posting some good pictures in the next couple of days, just have been very busy... sort of like everyone.)

I redid my 55 Gallon recently, as a semi biotope (Only non Malawi fish are 2 common plecos), as well as added a black background. I am very happy with the way it looks now, so i though i might as well share;)

There is quite a bit of current coming from the power filter outflow, it is just that now that there is sand, ALL of my fish dig, even the babies, so the tank never stays flat for long:D

thanks again :) It has cleared up completely now, so it looks a bit better, but i havent gotten any more pictures. The large rocks were kinda scary to put in the tank, as i was always afraid i would drop one. Luckily, i didnt :)

And in case anyone was wondering, here is the stocklist. All the fish were bred by me, except for the plecos. Their parents were either returned to the store or put out to my pond for the summer. Anyway, here it is:
2x Common Plecostomus
7x Yellow Lab
17x Orange Zebra Cichlid
1x Melanochromis chipokae
I understand that is too many fish, but they are all young now, and the stock shall be thinned out when they get bigger.

It may end up being too many..but africans are actually better in a more crowded invironment with in reason.. but theres less aggression when their are more of them.. but also that will depend on the ratio of males to females... my 55 gal is definitly at the peak in numbers of fish... i have no problems with any of them long term.. 2.5 years together now and always a few surviving babies add to numbers... but i do very frequent water changes and feed well.... and have lots of hide out and nooks and crannies so now one gets chased to death,.. so time will tell for you and then you can make the ajustments as you see fit..

Yeah, my tank has always been overstocked, even if i get rid of most of them, because they breed so rapidly. I have some adults in my pond right now who will return to this tank for the winter - 1x Female bumblebee, 2x Yellow Labs (Pair) and 3x Orange Zebras. I am pretty sure that with these guys, and the ones already in there, it would be fully stocked, correct? I would also like to add a Male bumblebee and a couple female chipokaes, so some of the orange zebras and yellow labs will probably have to go, i would think.;) But thanks for the advice:D

Here are some of my juvenile Africans. I know, they have a lot of growing ahead of them. A venustus, electric yellow, julidochromis marlieri, and a kigoma frontosa. The front is a really shy one. The marlieri seems to be the dominant fish in the tank. Agression seems to be spread out.

09-07-2008, 11:35 AM
no,
A lot of this stuff is species only tanks for breeding, especially the specialty stuff like Red Ngara, AER, etc. etc.. There are about 80-100 tanks currently up and running ranging from 10-240g....

Thanks for the compliments guys... I will be posting some more pictures soon, in 2 days or less so just give me a few more days...

No African Cichlid enthusiast should be "embarrassed" rather HAPPY to post your pictures.. It is not the "ability" to take a picture that counts, but, the ability to properly care for your fishes :)

So I have been working on it for a while now... I finally have a pair!!! take a look and tell me what you guys think? i will be updating this thread every once in a while to see if i can get the m to breed.. as oif right now the female is much more aggressive then the male.. but the male is a much stockier fish and im just waiting for him to come out of his shell..

These are the only two i have ever come accross and i had to pull strings to get the second.. i had originally bought the female from a friend of mine that is deep in the african predator scene.. he thought they were both males.. after seperating them for months my "male" that i posted pics of before was actuallt a dominant female and with no other fish in the tank reverted to female colors.. so i had to beg and trade this guy my soul for the male : ).. it was her tank that they are in so I introduced two smaller male Rhamphochropmis macropthalmus in with the esox male as dithers.. i would love to get more but right now funds will keep me at two.. i believe that they weill pair and breed for me.. they both chase the smaller macs around the tank..
