Is that one that is the 5th down a jewel cichlid? how is its personality, looked at a nice one and thinking about getting it.

Everything that I have read says that they are mean and aggressive. This one is over 4" long which is getting close to full adult size. I do not know if it is male or female, they are not dimorphic, so it is hard to tell. It is not a chaser, but it finds a spot and will protect it. Maybe if I had more than one, the aggression within breeding competition would appear. ????
Nice looking fish. I took awhile for me to find one that was not brown base color. I think I paid around $14 @ 3". I am glad that I have bought it.

this one right? if so its a "cobalt blue". scientific name i believe is Pseudotropheus zebra. theyre pretty common so u should be able to find them relatively easy.

Yah I know about cleaning the glass, and that tank isn't a 500, can't have that size tank at the moment. What I was saying is that I have ~13 odd tanks... (BUT I can tell you that hopefully within the next 5 years I will be getting/or making a huge tank and making it only Malawi.)

I wouldn't go as far as to say that I have all of them, but yes I do have a lot of them... More haps then peacocks.

And finally

I promise I will post better pictures soon. I didn't post one of my 50 grow out since they didn't turn out last night, but I have just put in a second by color and the males are showing there color in there tank like crazy.

Here are some older ones... I likely have posted them in this forum before but eh. (And yah... I have put a lot of money in these guys but at least I got them cheaper by going though Erik Dyke)

Oh and Red Devil, that is an Albino Taiwan Reef. I actually have 3 all the same age but 1 hurt his eye and hasn't grown much (is in the first or second picture). The other is in my 50.

Well I have seen large Taiwan reef at ~8 inches. They grow fast to ~4-5 inches then slow down a lot. Very very peaceful fish.

I actually have 1 in the tank that isn't albino.

But for what they can really look like:
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1235

If you have the space and are willing to wait for the fish to get comfortable. (IE it took a year to go from:

To this:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/Fish/IMG_1999.jpg

But just for scale, I got the albino at ~1.5 inches at X-mas and he is already the same size:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/Fish/03-10-07_2222.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/Fish/IMG_0969.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/Fish/IMG_2005.jpg

(I got the normal Taiwan at ~4 inches just starting to show color.)

Of course color depends on the fish... Look at what this guy has gone from.
When I first got him:

Nice, you know my Copadichromis borleyi (the red fin ones) for some reason lost all there color when I put them into a tank where they are the biggest fish.

Anyways I got my shipment in, sadly an Placidochromis sp phenochilus didn't make it. But I have some quick shots. (And as I type colors are blazing all over the tank, will take a vid.)

So the three fish I have never had before:

Kandeensis:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/IMG_2367.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/IMG_2331.jpg

Fossorochromis rostratus: (He is small but will grow up nice and big, right now the yellow labs are going head to head with him.)
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/IMG_2334.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/IMG_2347.jpg

Placidochromis electra: (Wow this little guy has gonads, he is going head to head with the German Red that is twice his size, and his coloring went from nothing to suddenly full blast in an instant when he hit the tank.)
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/IMG_2337.jpg

And I had to get this guy... After seeing malawi haps :-)
Note, still have to figure out a good way to take photos of him, albinos are always hard, but this guy is even harder. IE his face is hard to photo right.

Albino Flavescent:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/IMG_2346.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/IMG_2365.jpg

And I had to get this guy since my last one killed himself by the rocks. (He would scrape off half of his skin, it would heal then he would do it again, eventually he didn't recover from one scraping too many. It wasn't pritty...)
Jake Hongi:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/IMG_2360.jpg

And last but by no means least (IE best for last)...
Then I needed one for my 135, since the other guy is in essence blind and needs a substrate free floor to find food. Oh and this is a stunner, large, and blue based. (For those of you that don't know that is the much harder to find OB base.)
OB Ahli:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/IMG_2356.jpg

Yah turns is what it will end up being. And as for flooding the market we have some idiots that tend to do that. (IE 1 guy brought over 100 fryeri to the last auction alone.)

Andy yah I only have 1 electra. I had seen photos before but this was the first time I got one. In fact if I can get another and know it is a female that would be awesome, since they are one of the few haps that are colored for both female and males. (Though I don't even know if this is for sure a male.)

They are so hard to find those electra's..how big do they get? You will know in time by watching how it acts.. gorgeous and not timid either.. i can see he/she is enjoying their new home.i meant to post this one..i know what it is ..looked it up again..it is your Taiwan reef.. my favorite of all ..

Here is an update of my 135 mbuna tank

ikevi
10-20-2007, 10:06 PM
So then here are a load of pictures coming.... I finally was able to take some shots of my growout (where I put the lwandas and the electras. They all wanted to huddle in the corner.) (I am including a shot of it, funny fish don't like flashes... I can't blame them seeing as I go blind all to quickly from flashes.)

Note the lwandas are the small brown guys and the 1 obvious male. I payed 5 bucks for that male... This is why I like Erik. (Well the other fish are awesome too.) But now I get to see what male is best, though I think my original is still going to stay king.)

Ok enough talk posting pictures:

First off I have a lot of German Reds, long story. But I like fins and my current Alpha male doesn't have the fins, though he might be starting to grow. That being said this is his < 2 inch male with fish that are what ~3.5 inches. Obviously I plan on switching him into the 135 when he gets big enough.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/Fish/IMG_2535.jpg
And a shot of my tank of german reds... just to give an idea of how many. About half are female.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/Fish/IMG_2656.jpg

Ok more grow out shots. Notice the clumping, and the empty tank on the other side. (No comments on cleaning the tank, it was actually done 2 days ago. I try to pump these guys full of food to get them to grow faster.)

So then since we must post pictures here now, eh...

Ok anyways I haven't shown this guy to anyone yet.

So if you didn't know I have a problem with yellow labs, that is a very large surplus population that somehow manages to live in my 135. So far I have only pulled 2 fry out to let the survive and well it turns out 1 of them was this deformed guy. He acts just like all my other yellow labs, though they are just petco quality.

Anyways the pictures. (His body is normal only the mouth, but it still works and he eats just fine seeing as he is the same size as his brother that is also in the tank.)

So then I have been having fun taking quals, fighting bloat... and watching some cool colors. (The bloat was caused by me freaking out since I swear I saw ich, added salt slowly and heated, no ich at least, lots of fish stopped eating, now all but 2 are eating like champs, but I know what I am doing.)

Anyways my Taiwan Reef male has decided to become alpha male, and it is very fun to watch this guy in action right now.

These are old pics, they grew ALOT bigger before i got rid of them. The male eyebiter was huge and his colours were gorgeous, i got full whack for him at my LFS, when they usually only give a third of their value.

Ok so I was feeding my grow out, and well I had to take some shots. Sadly they didn't come out as well as I hoped, but the male electra is just stunning. His black strips are twice as dark as normal. Though the female doesn't seem to care. (I haven't seen much dancing going around, eh I will give them time.) Oh so I think I am going to be adding about 3 more 55s soon, though I haven't decided if I will just make them breeder tanks or what. And I will be adding some 20 longs for growouts and my apisto collection that will be growing. (I had 3 pairs, but 1 set died, I learned the hard way not to feed blood worms...)

Ok so now some photos

Oh and I tried taking some shots of my 135, color is going all around again. (Guess who has decided he will be new top dog...) Anyways if you don't know what this guy is I will soon be doing the vid update on him. I think I showed some of him when he wasn't showing any color but now you can get a glimpse of what he will be like:

(Sadly I missed an amazing shot, but eh it will come again.)

Oh and my Phenochilus Tanzania got in the way so I took a shot of him. Then my camera died so I didn't quite get the traditional 100 or so shots to pick the best ones from... (I do love digital in that way, ie I can take all I want.)

So some of my fish are really starting to show new color... The problem is that they aren't leting me take pictures of them. (I took ~96 shots and not a single one was good of the ones I wanted to show.)

So here are some decent shots, I haven't done anything to the pictures, hence too dark for some, etc. But I like most of them. (Does anyone have any good tricks for the Placidochromis sp. "Phenochilus Tanzania", aka Star Sapphire. My flash just washes him out.)

Eh anyways enjoy.

Oh and just fyi. I have sort of been absent since after passing my quals I sort of picked up a few games... and they sort of sucked me in... (I hadn't played any for about a year really.)

So when I left for the holidays I was afraid I was going to loose a lot of fish... But I didn't (not one in fact) so I was happy. Anyways because of the problems I had meds so I have finally gotten the water clear enough so that I can see my fish. And well they haven't been very nice to each other (ie some fin nipping), but man my male electra has certainly been trying to get that girl to make him happy. (She has grown but him not much.)

Anyways I had some distractions and I sort of forgot to clean the glass before taking shots... But well here are some shots...

So 1 hour later. And a very nice free fish. (He is likely almost 10 inches.) I have him in the smaller tank for the next week or two till I move him to the main tank.... And the tank is due for its water change tomorrow so well not the best photos. (The previous owner had him in a 30 gallon... Oh and we had fun confusing a parking lot monitor when we said were exchanging fish and would be leaving shortly... while he pulled out the giant bag with the fish.)

Oh sorry I for some reason I thought you all had some mystical method of knowing what fish I was getting :-) Anyways it is an Fossorochromis rostratus. I have this little (4") guy in the big tank. They grow fast and are really fun to watch. It is amazing to see that beast at work eating. I wish I could have put sand in the tank just to see him do his thing but well I know I couldn't keep it clean.

Well I was sitting on my couch yesterday and my dog jumped off... and suddenly I felt the tank in essance amplify the jump... not pleased. Then she semi ran next to the tank and suddenly I felt her run next the tank (ie delayed... and you aren't suppose to feel a 20 lb dog walking...)

So needless to say today, even though I haven't heard any odd sounds and such, I took out about 1/4th the water. And well since it is an overflow I have 3 piped powerhead plus one of the returns pumping water into the overflow.

The fish will be fine, it just doesn't look as nice :-( But well I was semi planning on moving in April... now I will be. If not earlier. (Though I don't really want to pay double rent for more than one month.)

Anyways I figured here would be as good as any to post the news. (And a quick shot of the tank.) It was only fully filled for about a week... but well I have it and these guys still have more room than they did in the 135.

My one and only african. He's in a tank with a much larger male jag, and grammodes. Suprisingly, they all get along!

So was feeding... and well his color has already gotten a lot dark... Then I noticed he was flaring up a ton so I got to taking photos again. Well it looks like my Protomelas sp. "Spilonotus Tanzania" (King of the tank... though a gentle king that no one dares touch) and him are having a semi spat... No mouth locking just flaring up at each other. Sadly I couldn't time my pictures right since they would always do it farther away from me and fish would get in the way. But well you can get a flavor of what is going on.

have had them for at least 4 years. the acei has a lot more yellow in the fins than indicated in the pics. the red zebra had a chunk bitten off the bottom near its stomach a while back. got both of them at the same time, along with others that died. didn't have a good place for them any more (long story), so my mom now has the acei and the red zebra was taken in for LFS credit.

So quick update... As was said in my photo thread of me moving most fish made the move well...

From the move I can attribute 1 dead discus and 1 killifish... (Both because I didn't remember to put bublers in there temp tanks, though they had filters.)

Then I had an empty 75 that I was going to fill back up... but I stripped my two female lwanda (One slightly early). I put them both in that tank... and the next day they were dead. (Really stinks since now I have no more female.)
Though I have about 12 fry. So far they are doing well.

So here are few photos of the fry. (Sorry about the blurry ones... they couldn't come out right for some reason.)

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/IMG_5199.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/IMG_5193.jpg

Vid:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/th_lwandafry.jpg (http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a399/ikevi/?action=view&current=lwandafry.flv)

Then to top it off my fridge/freezer died... So I used up my frozen food quickly... BUT I have an auction to go to on Sunday and I already have 4 lbs of frozen food set aside for me, so that isn't a big deal.

Anyways now I need to get another 55 for the breeder tank, and I am planning on getting another 30 to grow these fry out for a little bit. (I also am looking to put about a 180 behind the couch to move fish too and then I want to replace my cruddy 120 with a better 135 or something similar.)

So yah fun fun stuff. Anyways I will likely have a bunch of photos after the auction. I ended up packing the side room with the large tank, 75 and soon to be 2 55's. The problem is I made it so I can clean tanks, but there really isn't much room to view the tank. I decided more living space was better than than more space in the fish nook. (Not like there aren't fish all over the place in my apartment, but well that room is just fish.)

Eh I decided to take a few shots... I plan on moving the 30 to a different wall and moving the 50 to where that tank is.

Enjoy:

Few tank setup shots:

Astatotilapia latifasciata, aka Zebra Obliquidens in my mind have purple underbodies.

you were very close Ikevi and neat thing for me is i did not know about this one you mentioned.. the pundamilia nyererei..the only difference i could see is that they don't get as large..so it was interesting to read up on them..

Here are some of mine. They are in a regular 55 gallon tank, with lots of rockwork. These pics are around 2 months old, but not too much has changed. They are all malawis. Enjoy :)

(5" Male Orange Zebra which was recently exchanged for some other fish for my other tanks - don't worry though - i kept their 25+ offspring :) )

That is not all of them, but i only have 4 species in the tank - Auratus, Orange Zebras, Bumblebees, and Yellow Labs. All species are breeding, 'cept the bumblebee, because their is only one :P .

Well just a quick shot of the lwandas growing... They are in there own tank now, I hope to soon get them into a 30. Anyways they are likely ~3/4 inch maybe up to 1. That white sticker is over 2 inches. (I think it is 2.5.)

It seems like yesterday they were just fry rolling in there egg sacks. I think I still have 11, but well I can't tell for sure.

I should have just added this pic here instead of making a new thread. oh well lol :). My new front, red empress, jewl cichlid, and electric blue. This jewl toped out at 4 inches, I miss my gaint jewl, he got almost 6 inches long. :) Glad to report the font I saved is doing really well and growing back fins nicely. So far he's the 10th fish I bought out of pitty, I really gotta work on not doing lol... oh well all's well that ends well.

Thanks, they are definitely interesting to watch. But right now I think they're a bit spooked from the move and the new environment. They should feel at home soon though. :) The 120 Gallon is quite empty though with 8 Daffodils and about 6 Brevis in their shells.

Here's an unfinished pic of the tank. I just added some plants last night and will be adding a black background. It's a Hagen tank with 1/2" glass. Also waiting for the lights which are on order. Should be in this week.

http://gunnerx.ca/pics/120/P4217672.jpg

I will be picking up a group of Juli Transcriptus as next inhabitants of the tank.

Thanks, I really need to work on it to get it to look better but I have been swamped with work and other things. After a few days, it seems that the Daffodils are feeling at home. when I got back from work today, the Brevis' were already waiting for food but to my surprise, the Daffodils all came out from the rocks too. I was able to take much better pics this time. There's 8 of them with 2 being large and the smallest half their size.
