What should you use to transport a fish (size range of 2"-6") without using the standard plastic bags? It must not be a material that can be easily penetrated or fracture with pressure (say if it were to be stepped on by accident). It must be air tight of course, as it needs to hold oxygen and it must be resonably size to the proportion of the fish.

Any ideas?

watter tight gonna have problems. Better ask your mom for some tubberware bowls with lids the big ones.
Go to wallmart buy one of there sterlite containers with lids. grab a battery powerd airpump and a airstone if the trip aint gonna take more then a day. put like 5 or 6 inchs of watter in airstones. Duck tapes it shut and pop a few holes for the air to escape from the pump

Well type of fish would also come into factor as well. Like if it's a Piranha, you cna;'t just put it in bags, it will bite throught it easily.

what i do at my store is put it in a styrofoam box lined w/ a garbage bag and put water in it and than place the box in another box (cardboard) and tape it up.

5 gallon bucket with locking lid!! Same thing paint comes in! Home Depot or a good paint store will have new empty ones for sale. They work great!

I read this post earlier today and was just going to let it go, but since it's back up........ what exactly does........"let's just say it's very similar to shipping a fish" mean?

Haha, rehashing a thread from 05? I think the issue has long since past.

If I'm moving fish I like to use a cooler. I saw one on a thread here that had a battery operated air pump attached. (I stole the idea)

I usually line mine with a bag. Pour in the water from a foot or two above to get air mixed in well. Add fish and they're good for 2-3 hours. And the temp holds. The air pump at all times is an excellent idea though.

yea I definatly agree as well with the airpump. I moved mine in buckets with one of my haltertops on top so it would stop them from hangin in my front seat while I was driving. but that isnt water tight ehh..but now Im interested... what exactly areeee you doing with the fish if your "kinda shipping" them?

Crating is the only answer to the problem of being stepped on (300-500 psi easily). Now next day delivery of the "fish" is going to be really expensive. Go the standard styrofoam fish box method and label 'wild exotic illegal fish' so nobody will step on it. :D
