Just got my new monster fire eel in today. I'll snap some pictures later. Currently the big boy is dripping. He came in at a good 15" and is very fat.

Hard to tell, but looks like it has some really vibrant reds. Nice bright red line down the back. Looks like it could be a keeper

His colors are very intense. All the fire eels I have had in the past have very little color in comparison. His main lateral red line is actually a dashed line, and goes the full length of his body.

Jealousy prevails! I love big phat fire eels. I think you got a female there but that's just a guess. Don't be naming that eel Bob just yet. Can't wait to see the "in-tank" pics

I've never actually looked into how to sex spiny eels. The big 'one' is hiding very well still, and the best shot I have gotten so far is a shot of his nose.

I'll catch him, I'm trying to find my feeding tube, but can't find it. If I find it, then I can get some bloodworms to him.

love the color on your eel, another way to feed your eel if it doesnt eat fast enough is to place a jar into your tank with the worms already in the jar. the jar neck must be thin enuf so that the other fish cant get to the food while allowing the eel to get to it as well....good luck!!!

heres my fire eel...

That will not work for this eel. He is so thick that even the aros could get into a jar that he could get into.

Other than hand feed i saw someone put a cup just below the surface with worms in, and then You can select what is allowed in the cup lol.

Easiest is still just a feeding tube. Then I can target feed much easier, and stress/scare the fish less.

Probably seen this pic already of a fire eel that I photographed at the Shedd aquarium. This monster tank had about 6-7 huge fire eels in it. The experience of looking at all of them simultaneously made it seem very possible to sex them based on body type alone. Wish I had stepped back a bit when I took this photo because right next to this eel was another smaller and more slender eel that screamed male! Unfortunately there isn't much on the web about fire eels but I've read that two adult males would not share the same crevice without launching into a fight. I'm not sure if they can be sexed by venting. I'm thinking not.

fast but beautiful! his color is superb bro, love the spots on the tail. do you think he will become handtame? was he tame at his previous house?

He was a special order at my LFS. As he is acting right now, I doubt that he will become hand tame, but they are smart, so I'm hoping.

I picked up one a month or so ago that is about 20" and he didn't feed for a week, then he started feeding worms i held near him with tongs that i would gradually retract nearer to the surface as he approached them and a week later he rushes to the surface when he's hungry so i can feed him worms by hand. awesome fish. here's a full pic of mine and one of him begging for food!
