When I was a fishkeeper years ago I was also interested in bichirs but never got round to getting one.
In my fish rennaisance I decided to buy a senegal bichir, around 8 inches, got a really good deal on him.
And he's really grown on me. He's now my favourite fish I have. He's the most active fish I have, constantly on the move, never hiding. Only rests a bit after a meal.
He also seems to take notice of me when I come near the tank and comes up to the glass. Cute face too, cartoony dinosaur look.
And my, can he eat. I thought wolf fish were meant to be greedy, but he eats 3x the amount my wolf does, I throw in food for the wolf, the hujeta and the bichir and bichir gobbles most of it before the other 2 get a chance.
I love the way he swims too, usually undulating through the water like a snake, but sometimes gracefully gliding through the water without moving.
He's also such a cool cat, and completely fearless. My wolf is now just over 7 inches and the boss of the tank. When I first put an oscar in there, the oscar was the boss. Now the oscar is scared of the wolf, the wolf flares up and tries to bite it everytime he goes near the wolf's cave. Even if the wolf is not in the cave at the time :D
Yet the bichir has no fear at all, he just does his thing, constantly swimming around bashing into everyone. But not in an aggressive way, just a carefree way. He regularly swims THROUGH the wolf's cave, he's the only fish the wolf will let do that. The bichir goes in the cave while the wolf is there and the wolf kind of shoots it a glance like...
"he's in my cave, should I do something?"
Then thinks...
"nah bichir is oke.
He's never shown any aggression towards the bichir. He even tolerates the bichir nudging his head out of the way and wrapping round him etc
All of what I've described adds up to one extremely charming fish. I would really recommend them.
I know there are bichirs that people consider prettier than the senegal bichir, but do the others have as much character?
Because I like bichir so much I'm going to seperate him from the wolf soon. Because even though the wolf tolerates him, my wolf has recently become much more active and aggressive. He used to be shy and hide all the time, now he's almost always out day and night and moving around sporadically.
I've just set up a new tank, so I'll seperate him asap.
