Potential ban on all plecos..NOOOOOOO!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not good. Hopefully the northern states would be allowed to keep at least the exotics, as many can't survive the temps in the northern states. What is even scarier is that they don't mention a grandfather clause...

Difficult to say since this isn't about endangered fish, it's about invasive fish. Hopefully I'll know more about the situation soon. My biggest inquiry is, what is their definition of a pleco? Any armoured cat? Any suckermouth cat? Any loricariidae?

All I know is what's mentioned in the link of the first post. That and a few smatterings of info on my local fish clubs site which is how I found out.

As statedby stiffmeister, I doubt this will be erected anytime soon, though I do actually condone it. While my loricariidae love affair has been fun, where I to choose between the potential extinction of various plecos or their total ban from the aquarium hobby, I would choose the latter.

For the record, the "common" pterygoplichthyinids and hypostominids are in fact the most potentially invasive species, so I don't really understand their widespread allowance as opposed to other, smaller and less prolific species.
