how cold does the water get, if it is the mid 60's u could try a spotted or gator.

you could feasibly try any of the Lepisosteus genus gars in colder water, longnose, shortnose, spotted, and even Florida (introduced) have been found in areas where the water gets pretty cold. i definitely wouldn't risk it with a Cuban or tropical gar; an alligator gar could probably do ok though.
i have always been a huge fan of gars and have kept several (and currently all 7 species); i listed mine in a different thread already. i'm currently keeping 13 gars in various tanks. i'll try to dig up some pics to post; for now, here is a video of a crocodile gar (shortnose x alligator hybrid) and Florida gar eating...

I have seven silver Hujeta. Just love em. I think they should be kept in groups of at least six. Makes a big difference in their behavior.

I have them in my 210 gallon. When I combined them all from my various tanks they started schooling together and eating a lot more. They actually dominate the 5 spot jewels and jurapari I have in the rest of the tank. When threatened they line up across the tank in a perfect formation with there beaks pointed at the harraser. They range from 12 to 8 inches. Ill try to get a picture online.

Ill work on getting some pics together. Im worried im going to have to put one of the orange pike down. He has hole in the head and lateral line erosion and nothing I can do seams to help at all. Tried medication his feeders and the crab he will eat, as well as isolation and immersion treatments. Also tried giving him extra vitamin C. Keeps getting worse. What I want now is a nice asian red. Anyone got one? lol

sorry to hear that!
is HITH a hopeless case?
redtailfool
05-25-2005, 9:37 PM
Not really HITH can be caused by Hexamita but its commonly caused by poor water quality from lack of water change and inadequate filtration and diet. Ive seen a lot of hith get better just by increasing water changes.
The only gar that i want are Cuban Gars. George A has a trio and they are absolutely beautiful. Kinda pricey for a gar though. 300 a pop.

Yeah I know the bad water quality aspect of HITH. Unfortunetly your talking to a fellow who does weekly water changes. I also feed with krill on a regular basis Any other ideas on how to treat this disease? I'm sure he is getting enough nutrition, and the water is near perfect. Id appreciate any input.

Thanks for the come back. I order via the internet not many keep the fish I like. Had to get ride of my monsters when I left alaska the first time and I took a break but back into it again. I PM you twice thought you were not interested in communicating but glad you are. I going for a amazon tank going to custom build it in a 20' x 30' addition. TANK 158" long, X 96" deep, X 60" tall. Wainting on a Acrylic dealer for a price on a sheet 144"L x 48" W, X 2" thick.
I'm going to set-up two 900gl show tanks as a temp holding tanks. I will start with two stingrays, and three Arampais gigas and see how that goes. I have 45 Koi coming from Phonenix this summer. Take care brother not many of us in Alaska.
