The Concientious Marine Aquarist by Robert M. Fenner check that book out. It spiked because you added two many fish probably. How did you cycle it with or without fish. You need some kind of waste to cycle it. Whether it be a piece of dead shrimp from the store or Damsels.
Yup It spiked becuase of two many fish, and when you cycle the tank my buddy used a bunch of shrimp which eventually died off and gave it a nice cycle =)
How About That

Hey guys, what does it mean to be "spiked"?
"Spiked" in this case refers to a sudden massive increase in the ammonia level.
