Here's my Eupterus from May 06. Thats when i got him. He was really light and you could see his spots. His Fins didnt really have the extensions on them when i got him.

Here's one from last month. I cant believe how FAT he's gotten. His belly is seriously huge. I hardly feed him. I think he sucks up every last molecule of uneaten food from my Cichlids.
The extension on his dorsal is about 3" long and he's a LOT darker. He's about 8" long.

nice synos.. I have an Ocellifer, eupterus, greshoffi, marmoratus (tiny lil thing) and soloni. Bichir killed my Perticola, bad wc killed my Schoutedeni and my congicus & notatus just disappeared.

The only one I ever can get a decent pic of is the Eupterus...

yeah, my 75 was going to be a Tangy tank with Synos. I was so mad when I came home 1 day to find my bichir with the perticola's head stuck.

your lil one looks like an Ocellifer.

the worst part is the price of some of them. 1 shop just got some multipunctatus in so might just get 1 or 2. I'm not a bottom guy but i like these for some reason...

wow i cannot believe a bichir would chomp down on the Syn. because of the bony spine etc.. did the bichir actually eat it? I like cat fish of all types.. never thought about it in the beginning but then they just started to appeal to me..and plecos too. I hope the little guy is a Ocellifer..that would be nice since i only have one other and he is older.. thank you.

it had its head. The petricola was the most active of all syno's, so when i didnt see it moving I went to look closer. That's when I saw the bichir had it's head and reached in to get it hoping it just happened. he let loose but it was too late, it sufficated.

lfs has some nice size multi's that I might get this weekend.

I just got my first bichir about 2 months ago...i was so surprised when i saw it chewing its food like a dog...then it would chomp the food so hard it would fling it..and would have to go and find where the food landed.. it was so amusing to watch him eat..but i did not realize it also would eat other fish in the same way.. :irked:

My Euruptus synodontis are together. in a 125gal... i was told as long as there is enough room..they would be fine together..and so far they are.. .. i think they are mostly territorial.. i could be wrong since i do not know if some synodontis are different together with the different types.

I did not know you had Nelson in with goldfish{very pretty by the way} how do you keep the temp right for both? . goldfish are so passive. .. Maybe if Nelson were in african tank the africans would put him in his place when nessasary, at least my africans do. I hope he does better for you.. he is really a great looking synodontis,

Fancy goldfish do fine with higher temps than normal comets. I keep the temp at 74.

Gold fish should be 65 to 70 at the warmest and synodontis should be 78 to 80.. so the goldfish you are keeping too warm..and synodontis is too cool.. .. we have had gold fish for many years and i have never heard that theres a difference between fancy and plain in water temps.. :) Goldfish are a cold water fish and can be kept in water down to 35 degrees.. but we do bring ours in for the winter because the ice would get too thick in the pond.synodontis may have behavorial problems due to water temp..i did see on line a few people did keep their gldfish at warmer temps but every book i have read i always read that this would shorten the goldfish life span..

I used the planet catfish info when deciding whether I could put the featherfin in my tank. They say temps of 71.5 to 79 degrees farenheit are the featherfin's range, which is why I thought 74 degrees would be fine.

here's the link: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=121

As far as goldfish temperatures, yes they are a cold water fish but that doesn't mean they need to be in cold water to survive. Warm water increases their metabolism, meaning the eat more, poop more, and need very high water quality. I have more than adequate filtration and aeration in my tank, keep the parameters pristine. If you search the internet, you will find many different temperature ranges listed for goldfish. Many goldfish forums state that 76 is the high range of their temperature tolerance.

The decorus hides a lot. He is really cool and since that picture his trailer on his dorsal fin is even longer, I just wish that he would come out more when the light is on. I am moving him from my 180 that has tons of driftwood to a bare bottom 150. That is about the only picture I have of him. All of the others are just of his tail..lol...Thanks. :)

Sorry, I didn't realize there was a response. Thanks for the welcome...those in the photo were ~7 days old. I used the flower pot method....I just posted a classified ad, bc I am moving in 5 weeks and need to sell hundreds.....I will get completely out of freshwater and likely do a saltwater nano tank for 1 year before I move again.

Here is the most unusual syndontis picture that you will EVER see....! I took this photo on 3/11/07.

34 day old Synodontis Petricola ~30 day old Albino Bristlenose Pleco (largest)
20 day old Synodontis Multipunctatus (darkest fish) ~ 5 day old Brown Bristlenose Plecos~ 40 hour old Synodontis Petricola

This was taken at the bottom of a glass with a blue towel underneath it.

I have a couple questions on Synodontis Eupterus. Can it go with my oscar, senegal bichir, and bala shark in a future 120. What does it eat?
And a personal question do you think it will be overstock and if not what can I add. Was thinking a delhiez bichir.

It sounds like it would work out well.. of course depending on all the fish sizes.. Oscar especially.. but we will listen to other folks combinations with the Eupterus.. my two are in the 125gal african tank.. and do great with them. They eat sinking pellets, algae wafers, frozen silversides, almost anything they can scavenge before someone else eats it..they are not picky eaters..

my eupterus is in with two bichirs and 3 balas, and before this setup my larger bichir came with me through several cichlid tanks with dempsies, green terrors and an oscar. He leaves my eupterus alone

I have a question on the Syndo cats, Im setting up a 55 african biotope tank ( NOT cichlids, sorry...:grinno: ) The has a Delhezi Bichir and 2 Leopard Bush Fish... I plan on adding some congo tetras and maybe a African Brown Knife.... now what type of syndo could i fit in there? I dont want something that will get huge and need a upgrade this is a perminent tank so no upgrades. Ive read these guys can be a little mean when some one is in there spot so they should be able to stand up to the bichir right? I dont want it to be nipping and picking at everyone though, so only aggresive when needs to be, other then that ill let you guys help me out on this one.

Thanks,
Spencer

Here's Mine. Old pic but I have no idea when I'll get another as he hardly comes out and when he does he is really fast. I happen to get a pic this day because I was changing tanks and i took all the hiding places out(also explains the mess in the tank).

For small peacefull synodontis I'd say synodontis nigriventrus or "upsidedown catfish" They stay small and are awesome, best to have 3+ of them so they aren't so nervous.

Here's a couple pics of some I've had in the past. Multipunctatus, Flavitaeniatus, and Decorus ~Trent

I picked up 3 of these little guys (2.5-3inches). They were sold as Synodontis Longirostris but I'm not so sure they are now. Maybe hybrids? Its tough to get pictures of them. The only time they come out of the rocks is at feeding time and they are moving too fast for a picture. Can anyone confirm what species? thanks

I have to say he looks like a Synodontis robbianus to me..they are easily mixed up with the synodontis Nigrita ..the main difference is the nigrita has a brown/black body and the robbianus has a brown color..he gets to be about 5 inches if he is indeed the robbianus synodontis..which i think he is..

I have the chance of picking up a Synodontis Njassae for about 20-30 bucks, it looks like its about 5-6 inchs as well. Im planning on making a African Biotope and this would go perfect but i just need to find out a few thing. How mean are they? I want it to be able to stand up to the Delhezi Bichir when he is full grown but i dont want to be a pest and always bugging him (The del will be around 14 inchs when full grown) How big will it get? I read around it they said a max of 11.6 inchs but usually around 7-8 inchs, is that right? What kind of food does it eat? High protiens? High vegetable matter? I was thinking of throwing in some amazon swords or something but i dot want them to be destroy. Will it eat algea like some of its relatives? How compatable is it usually? Will it be okay with some larger tetra's?

Thanks,
Spence

I really could not tell you whether it would be ideal tankmate to a bichir but i would think they would be fine..i know it is a synodontis from lake malawi ... and in the wild it would eat zooplankton, algae, insects and crustaceans..so i am sure it would enjoy algae pellets and cichlid pellets as well as frozen silversides and frozen shrimps and it also makes a squeaking noise which can be heard through the tank glass and it is a very attractive synodontis .. if you get it please post his picture....

I will deffinatly post some pics for you freaks if i get it ;) I will be getting another Synodontis for sure, I would post pics of it but it past away. My whole african went down the drain when i added a piece of driftwood and it killed everyone in the tank but the bichir, by everyone i mean:
2 x Leopard Bush Fish
1 x African Butterfly
2 x Kribensis
1 x Synodontis Multi.

It made me put the tank aside for a while and i started but with CA/SA cichlids but i have to upgrade them so im gonna set the 55 up as a African Biotope again. Wish me luck! :D

I have been trying to build up a colony of these creatures of the night. Apparently they are shoalers. Darn LFS imports them 1 or 2 at a time... at 11 bucks each.

If I can find lily pads I'll bet they would be out more often. I had to blind them with flash to get these rare pics.
