Lost My Irritants This Mornin' :(

This morning I found my Irritants floating ... problems with the filtering system, if the guy whom I bought it from here in Milwaukee years ago see's this ... man I'm sorry. After accepting my lost I went out to a few local stores, came across four Serrasalmus Hollandi and they reminded me of my loss and I had to have them, there 2" - 2.5" and are now in my 80 Gal. tank. Question; as they were in one tank when I purchased them, is it safe to keep them together or will I at some point want/need to seperate them ... asking here first before searching for more info.

Sorry about him bro. I don't know anything about hollandis, lol, so I can't help out there... but again, sorry about him.

Hollndis are one of the smaller types 5-6" adult size, I kept 3 in a 35g long tank for over a year with no problems.

Sorry for your loss man, but be weary that the fish you bought were true Hollandi because S. Hollandi is based on a single specimen but is unfortunatly a common name importers use so LFS tend to use it as well. I will bet you that the fish are not Hollandi though.

Hiya JD&etc, welcome to MFK. When you hit 5 keep going, that is the whole point. What gets sold as hollandi? Where did you see that only one has been taken, was it Axelrod's?

PIRAMBEBA - Unknown species, not commonly seen in pet stores or home aquariums. Recommend keeping as solitary species in home aquarium since little is known of its background. Very likely a fin biter.

INTRODUCTION

S. hollandi has not been authenticated as a true species, though the name is still considered a valid name. It is based on a single specimen described. Holland's piranha is rhomboid with a prominent humeral spot on the flank. The species is heavily spotted, but spotting diminishes midway to the belly area. The caudal fin edging is hyaline and a very dark blotch in a form of a "V" is prominent on the hypural margin extending out. The holotype image (see top) provided to OPEFE by Dr. Antonio Machado is of an S. hollandi at approximately 109 mm SL. According to Dr. William L. Fink he has many species cataloged as S. hollandi by South American collectors, majority are S. rhombeus juvenile forms. The species collected from southern Brazil and Bolivia are believed to be this species. However, until a complete revision of South American fishes is done it will remain unresolved. Some of those are purported to be S. eigenmanni, a species known only from Venezuela

I once had 3 small piranha given to me as Hollandi that were heavily spotted and had a pronounced hook to the anal fin, I had them for over a year and they remained at around 6" long. They looked like the pic in Axelrod's mini atlas.
I can never tell the spacies apart myself but the 3 lived in a long 35g with no problems, I think rhombeus would have killed each other andd both eigenmanni and rhombeus would have grown some.
here are a couple pics of what is being ided as hollandi, eigenmanni ( which I think is a mislabelled juvie rhomb) and a couple rhombs. At least with the big one Id is pretty certain.

HOLY CRAP thats a HUGE fish!!!! lol That is why I do not swim in ANY lake, pond, river, ocean...ect...lol....I have a fear of fish biting me...I was bitten once, a big fish on a lake I was swiming in chomped on my big toe...left a scar...I swear I was running on top of the water twards the beach!!! lol

The fish bites that bugged me the most were in Louisiana and were from 2-3" blue gills that would mistake the hairs on my legs for munchies and pluck them out one bt one, amusing but very annoying. Also had a scare one night in Galveston Texas where a shark bite had occured a couple weeks before. I was wading around in chest high water in the moonlight when something hit me hard in the back. As I was heading quickly to shore something bhushed past my leg. I got all the way to the beach before I figured out what it was, a large school of striped mullet was cruising through. Got a nice cardio work out.

Thanks to all, I have a few (Past) pics of my Irritant and a few recent pictures of my replacements(have since seperated them) due to "Tail/Fin Nips" which are quite obvious in my pics along with some new pics of my Redbellie, Rhom, Midas, Red Devil, Talapia and Midas'ssss ... sorry it's been along time since posting pics on what used to be "AT" and may need some help. What a way to get my 5Th post :( , any help ???

Okay, to post pics (I had to ask, twice cause I screwed up the first set of instructions) this is how I do it.
Save your pics into your computers "my pictures" file, best in jpg format.
Then start a post, you must type in at least one word, then click below the message box where it says "go advanced", this will open another window,
scroll down until you find a box that says "manage attachments" and click it,
that will open a smaller window where you will find several boxes that say "browse", click the top one and it will open a window where you can select youp picture, then click"open",
repeat that step to select more pics, then click "upload", if there is a problem like the file is to big it will tell you then (a max of around 600 pixels on a side or less is good), then click "close window" and then below where it says "manage attachments" find where it says "submit message". That should do it.
