Just wanting to get a look at what everybodies got. Tell us what you're feeding and what he/she is housed in and whatever else you'd like to add. I'll throw some up later tonight.
Oh cool another excuse to upload some pics of my GT lol. He's about 8" in a 130 gallon. I included a tank pic as well.

Compared to the size of your filter intake, I'd say your over judging his size. It could be the angle I'm seeing him from too. He's still a cool fish though.
Looks like he got in a pretty good brawl. I don't think that half a ripped off fin will grow back, it's too far gone.

Thanks guys. I have had him for about 2 years now. He was around 3" when I got him.
balton777 - He's a solid 10" +. His tail is fine it's just the picture.
I'll try to get some side shots of him but that is hard to do. Whenever I get near the tank he starts flaring and banging the glass, always facing me. He's all show though. He chases his tankmates around but no damage done.

I don't know about you guys but its hard taking good pictures with my camera. And I can NEVER get a good shot of "still flared fins" with him. I can't express how cool the colors are in his fins...But I'm sure other GT owners can relate.

Look for a tripod at a garage sale. Got mine last summer for $3. Works awesome. I'm not real good at the photography thing either but I found if you angle the camera to the tank it eliminates the flash/glare in the pic. Just don't take the photo straight on with the glass. Give it a shot

There is no way to really know unless he know who bred it, but it looks like either a silver or a mix of the two.
Tango374
02-23-2007, 1:18 PM
Yeah...I know its a mix of the two. You can't tell from the pics I posted but when you see the fish in person it's kind of like a 75/25 gold/white ratio. The orange is just not that bright...almost washed out. Thats why I'm trying the krill, to brighten the orange that he has up. Probably won't work though, but I figure its worth a shot. Krill worked wonders on oranges and reds of previous fish I've had in the past...But they weren't mixes like this one.
Still with the all the gill flaring and finger chasing that this fish does I'd be stupid to give him up for another GT, gambling on whether or not he had the same personaliy as this one. He's is without a doubt, the meanest GT I've ever seen.

I thought it was something that happened with the males as a result of breeding. Now I think this idea is wrong. Can someone please explain? I'd like to see if I can get mine to grow a nice hump on its head (not sure if its male yet tho)
Please explain if possible I think a lot of people might be wondering too. Thanks! :D
Tango374
02-28-2007, 12:10 PM
From what I've gathered, which isn't alot, the hump is a symbol of dominence that wards off other males and attracts females for mating, kind of like a bucks antlers. If he is kept in a healthy envirnment with plenty of good water changes, good water flow and filteration and fed a healthy varity of foods you should have a pretty good turn out. The most important detail though is that the male GT is made to be the dominent male of the tank...keeping him alone doesnt' do it, he has to be the boss over other fish. His family tree, I wouldn't doubt, has alot to do with it also.

Just picked this one up today. I couldn't help myself but buy it. The fish chased around everyone in the tank in the petstore, even tankmates that were an inch larger than him. But what really caught my eye was how large his hump is for how small he is. Every new fish that I get I measure the first day I get them home...usually I don't measure out of the water like this on small fish but I made an exception with this one...then I screwed up the shot and didn't get a good angle of it's hump and on top of that he moved right as I took the pic so it isn't set right on the ruler....good one.:irked:
It actually measures out to be 2.75'' and I believe it to be a male based on the coloring of his fins and hump but only time will tell. I'll take more pics when he gets acclimated.

seeing all these GT's i want to try another, but i already lost three, the last one i had(morpheus)may he rest in peace ruled the tank for about a month or so then one day i found him bellyup... surprisingly out of all my cichlids i think it was my firemouth that put him down.

Just took these last night (2 good shots out of 40:nilly:!!). I don't have the right lighting right now and had to lower the shutter speed to let in more light but any movement screws up the whole pic so these two taken were by luck when he was not moving :grinno:.

Thanks. Your right, they are always on the go!! I usually use a halogen light shining from the top of the tank to give me enough light but the bulbs are burnt out. This usually gives me enough light so I don't have to use the camera flash and up the shutter speed to about 100 to get clean shots even when he's on the move. For those last two shots above, I lowered the shutter speed all the way down to '8'.

No.
Genetics is the only way to get one that has the looks of the fish in your avatar. Some GT's have better coloring than others due to their family genes, because of that, fish dealers like to cop out and label them "royals" to get as much $$$ as they possibly can.
Alot of people will disaggree with me and thats cool. But I bet the majority of them are the ones that spent the money for a royal;)

Miles that fish is awesome. Fairly rare too. You hardly ever see them anymore. They have quite the reputation for aggression...how is yours'? Well he's a bit small now, keep us updated.
Went shopping the other day and came home with six juvenile's from four different fish shops ( 1.5" - 2.5"), of them this little guy is showing potential. He is 2".

After years and years of being in the monster cichlid obsession, I finally purchased my first pair of GTs! This little breeding pair of Goldsaums were absolutely too stunning to pass up when I came across them in a store about a week and a half ago. They had laid eggs that very morning actually, so they haven't spawned in their new home quite yet.

Ummm, if you read the title of the thread carefully, this thread is supposed to include TRUE GT's, and Gold/White saums... "GT and Gold/White saum pic thread"
Just that true GT's aren't that common (I think only one person has posted a true GT in this thread? too lazy to go though the 16 pages to find out), and I like the saums better. They mix with others better, and their color is better. That's just me though, A. rivulatus are nice too though.

I have also heard that. Especially how saums will almost always loose arguments with their tankmates.
I'm keeping three together right now (one is small and doesn't look very good) but beside some minor chasing once in a while, they're doing great together and starting to develop a nuchal hump.
They never attack their tankmates. In my tank anyways.
I think that definitely depends on the individual. Mine rules my tank and isnt afraid to fight for it

I agree, though i do feel it has more to do with the size of the saum vs. it's tankmates, as well as what the tankmates are and what not.
What do you keep yours with? I thought it was practically alone aside from some cats or something? I'll have to go back and look at your pics :)
Any saum that holds it's own against jags, RD's, festae, etc... is not the norm, which is why I said "almost always loose arguments".
BTW, your saum has an awesome shape! I prefer the streamlined look over the huuge nuchal hump. Big ups to your saum! :D

i keep mine with a sev, jd, oscar, and an aro. not that it says much about the quality of his arguments, most fish usually dont give up much of a fight. although i do agree this would happen with jags, rds, and festae. mine would probably back down im assuming.

Optimist, I think that you would be correct on claiming you're saum being a male. No ifs, ands, or buts... thats a boy. Lol, probably the easiest GT gender ID ever.

My problem is getting the water to stay in the cage, it keeps leaking through the mesh:grinno:
Anyway, the males age is unknown as I got him 7" long but at a guess 3-4yrs and the female is 1, both in a 220gal (6x2x2.5)

Just got these two, hopefully one (2 would be better) turns out to be female so I can have a pair of silvers. Its too hard to tell could go either way, what do you guys think (they got better colour now they are in the tank but I cant get any pics of them).
Sorry for bad pics, they wouldn't stay still, at least the background is in focus.

Hope you end up with what you are chasing there Nova.Looks promising.
That silver male of yours has a nice solid body.Looks well taken care of.Most silvers in brisbane often throw fry that are half gold and half silver.I have also seen this with gold saums. Not easy to find good specimens here.
Yours looks as good as they come though IMO.:)

Thanks, I really like my male, he's one of my favorite fish but right now he has an internal parasite which I'm treating for (any good remedy's would be appreciated).
Today I actually went out to find a Gold male as I am thinking about setting up a Saum community of 2 male (1S/1G) and 4 females (2S/2G) (will this work with two males in one tank?), but when I saw the silvers (which are rare here) I had to get at least one.
About a month ago I saw a real stunna of a female Silver Saum which was around 6" long and looked as good as my male. I didn't buy her as mine had fry at the time. :cry:I should have bought her:cry: .

If you were here I would give you my other gold male. He's smaller around 5+".Nice specimen but. Also a smaller female too.The smaller male won't mix with my Cuban so he has to go.To bad as I think he is the better of the 2 males in shape .As for mixing,I think it could be done in a say a 180.Aquascaped so each pair had one end each.As for the extra females ,I think it will be the paired females that do the damage to them .
Attached a pic of him aswell.

Just something to do, drove to melbourne to get donuts for a mate for his 21st with two mates and after we were like "that was interesting, where next". And brisbane it is, I wanna pick up some nice fish aswell (kinda forgot to in Melbourne :duh: ), I'd put them in a big esky with an airator, and do a waterchange half way.

Use a seeded foam filter with the airator. That way you have bacteria working in your favour while travelling.I can supply you with one when you get here if you want.Does the esky keep your water warm enough. Not that it gets that cold here but for at your end.If you are serious ,PM me for sometime address.I'll hold him for you if you want.Would be good to see him go to a Mfker.

Green terrors are pretty cool, kinda messy though. I have four one is about 8 inchs one is about 6 inches and 2 are about 4.5 inches. The male is the biggest one. He acts like a doggie. when I stick my face close to the tank he rams his head into the glass and he'll do something with his mouth to make him look mean. I'll post some pics of this later!!!!

I'm afraid I don't have any GTs right now....but all these pictures of such INCREDIBLE fish are making me very nostalgic. My two cents on the whole "true GT" thing. I actually had a large male (like 8"+) and female "true" GT. As cool as it is to say you have a "real" Green Terror....it was rough. They never spawned, and the male could NOT co-habitat with ANYTHING. He was outrageously aggressive. He broke the tank lid and died on the floor in the middle of the night...I was sad...mostly because I paid $80 for him. I'll stick to the "Fake" GTs from now on!

How about these guys? I caught (yes, with a net) them in waterways outside of Honolulu when I lived there. Idiots released them and they bred like mad. Hundreds at all sizes. Largest terrors I've ever seen. Sadly, Hawaiian Airlines doesn't allow fish in checked baggage, so I couldn't bring young back to the mainland. TheFishGuy has 14 of them growing out that I need to get a few of, or just get one of my buddies to catch some and ship them out now that I'm situated back in Wa.
Sorry for the terrible shots, perfect photos wern't my priority.

Welcome to the site Davey!
When it comes to color variations, there are Gold Saums (color can vary from yellow/gold, to orange/red hues) and White Saums (most times it's silvery white, but I've seen some that were more opaque).
So yours would be a gold saum.
There are also True Green Terrors, which have no saum (german for 'seam') color at all.
