are there any piranhas that can live alone in a 30 gallon tank for life?

throw a single red belly in there if you choose to add more do it in odd #'s but keep it more than 3. the only problem is that they get big and will have to accomadate.

Kept a big rbp in a 35. Grew up alone and was a bit dull but would take goldfish and worms from my fingers.

Any tank with a width less than 18" isn't really a good tank for piranha.

If you want aggression in a small space I'd agree with the exodons (which are a food of piranha in the wild but still kick ass).

Serrasalmus Sanchezi, and I think Spilos can too, but a Sanchezi will only get 6inches and be fine in a 30-35g.

keep your 30 gal as a feeder tank, check the classifieds for a bigger tank. In a 249 gal tank, my reds outgrew it in less than 2 years. started out with 8, lost one. size was from about 10 1/2 to 12 1/4 being slightlly over a 1 1/4 lbs.

The rule of thumb is 10g per inch, so please explain to me how you would keep a Sanchezi or Spilo in a 35 for life.....another case of somone talking about something they know nothing about. :wall:

That and the fact that Sanchezi's like to swim, and a longer length would be more important than width....

Also, whoever suggested a RBP, mine is in a 55g and is pushing 9", so that would never work out in a 35 for life, as he is outgrowing the 55g.

If you are really interested in a piranha, either get a baby rhom, which grow 1"yr approx...but they get up to 16" in captivity....so you will eventually have to upgrade.
The other route would be to get a baby elong, you could probably keep one in a 55g for life if you got him a nice powerhead.

its best to keep piranhas in groups, it would do better then being alone in a 35

You could keep any small sarrasalmus in a 35 for years they are very cool P's and they must be kept alone.Good luck

The rule of thumb is just a generality, it depends on the fish, just as some piranha are shoaling fish and others are solitary, I kept a single rpb in a thirtyfive for several years and it got huge but was not an active fish and the tank was far to small.

The Serrasalmus hollandi, though hard to find is only supposed to reach around 5" long, and the Wimple's piranha, although not a true piranha is easier to find and only gets to 6".

U can house a rhom there for a longggggggggg time before u need to upgrade! And btw pygo's are the only p's that CAN be kept together, regardless of tank size or temp. there is still always a chance one will kill the other! The only benefit of a shoal is the fact they'll be a little less skittish, and a shoal looks much cooler :)
