Classification - Utsurimono (roughly meaning "reflections")
Type - "Shiro Utsuri" bread by Omosako
I like them a lot! A pond of them with 'Hi utsuri' and a few 'Ki utsuri' would look hot!

I've kept fish outdoors for around 10 years or so, koi, goldfish, orfes,,roach, tench and my prized possession is Sidney the sturgeon. I built the pond with my brother, and we'd never built a pond before so please don't be too critical. Also I don't use a UV anymore, the ponds very natural, don't do much to maintain it except clean the pump/filter etc and scoop and leafs/scum off the top.

Finally found a card with pictures of my pond in Houston. It was stocked with butterfly that grew from 6inches to 18inches lots of cherry barbs and mollies. It was in the front yard, so I had to build up a berm to hide it from the street. Later on I got smart and added waterfalls, the pics of that are on a different card.

The outdoor pond is only partly iced over. I have a heater in the pond to keep the ice from forming in the river or getting too thick on the main part of the pond. Thick ice really plays hell with concrete. However the heater plays hell with the electric bill....but how can you put a price on precious babies?

I have 2500g outside and instead of heater i am using air pump that is in my basement( 75F) that is pushing the warm air into the water with help of two 12" air stones.today is 19F and still no ice.The cost is $5 a month. However the moist air from my basement becomes ice over time and blocks the tube so once a week i have to dip the tube in warm water and blow it,but that is it.

The biggest one is probably about 24" maybe a little bit bigger (the bright sparkly orange one. And the pond is 800 gal., but in the process of extending the pond which will make it 2000 gal. hopefully it will all be finished in about a couple of months.

Here are a few of our breeder Kohaku being released back into their spawning pond earlier this year. The pond was drained a month or so earlier and cleaned out a bit. The Kohakus were housed in a greenhouse and checked for any possible parasites. In the photo they are only a few weeks off before spawning occures.

Yes - those are Rosy Barbs. I started with 8 two years ago and now have about 200. They lasted thru the winter - even when temps hits 2c.
