Per the discussion between ethnics and rallysman......

Anyone who has recently picked up a 1" dat throw a pic on here and we will see who can get theirs to grow the fastest.

This is just for fun and a good way to watch our dat progression.

I will get it started. Here is my dat, I think that he is just under 1".

I cant get bloodworms around here, Do you think at that size they will eat freeze dried blood worms? or should i just cut up peices of shrimp?

ethnics
02-19-2007, 7:33 PM
they should eat whatever they show interest in. so far i noticed they are not afraid to try new food. mine are devouring freeze dried plankton at the moment which i got at my lfs for pretty cheap. they dont even eat that many blood worms. they seem to show more interest in shrimp looking/tasting items.

Variety is the best thing that you can do to for the diet of a fish that you are trying to grow out. Change it up every night.

Do you have some more pics so we can check out his body and pattern? It's hard to see him in that pic.

It's cool that so many people are starting to pick these guys up.

ethnics
02-19-2007, 7:58 PM
lemme try to take some new ones so everyone can see the actual patterns. and i never really saw the beauty in dats til i joined this site. they add such delicacy to a setup. and they look sick. my lfs had some big ones last year for around 30 bux but i didnt kno what they were so i passed them up. gimme like 10 mins for update pics.

edit: yah my camera sucks. i can't focus in on this lil tiny fish. it jus keeps coming out really blurry and i think im stressing them out because they went all black lol. ill keep trying n if i get some better ones ill post em up.

Yeah, I just recently got on the day kick too. But, I haven't really seen too many around here until now.

Just try and get a pic whenever you can w/o stressing them out. It took me a while to get the one I had. They are quick little things and being sooooo small doesn't help.

ethnics
02-19-2007, 8:19 PM
being small is the worst part. but 1 thing that irritates me but makes me laugh, is whenever im near the tank he looks me straight in the eye. face to face. everywhere i turn or look hes still lined up perfectly head on with me. he wont turn sideways lol

I hate all of you. Seriously. I can't get my LFS to order in any indos, nor can I find a vendor that can ship me any for less than $80....plus the cost of the fish. So for all of you who have them, and can get them readily....I hate you.

(Otherwise I'd be all over this contest. LOL. Maybe I can enter my clown knife....no one will notice....right?)

aquaticholic, i think almost all these baby indo's come in sick and very weak... mine were so weak when they came in last week i almost thought i wouldn't get any this year. a week later i saw only 5 left, i bought 2 cuz the other 3 looked weak, few days later theres only 1 left. i needa go back n buy it. my 2 are doing great so far. and i wouldn't say there "readily available". i waited over a year, and i only bought 2. luckily at only 15 a pop

Ordering them from a vendor on the site here. I can't frickin' wait.....but I gotta. Payday ain't till the 1st. Ordering Indos (Microlepis I think is the latin name...might have mispelled it.) Anyway, like most you'll find they are in the 1" size range. Don't care...Lord knows I have a 55g they can spend time in currently....and the 100g that should be here next week.

I dont believe alot of you guys on the east coast who are claiming to have 1" widebars. They are probably indos that have nice wide bars. Count the bars. Are there 6 or 7? hopefully you guys didnt get jipped.

My 3 fellers. All 3 are indos, could pass as widebars if you dont know the difference =P, but planning to keep them and add them with my widebars and thinbar along with a lechardti. All 3 have full necklace.

You know, that thought was in the back of my head... thats is why I didn't buy any yet. I'm thinking I'll probably get some of the indos just so I don't get jipped.

YAh, i dont want many of you guys to get jipped either, but the pics of my 1" indos in the bag just above your post makes it look like i have baby widebars cuz u can see every single bar. Indos have 7 distinct bars, while widebars have 6. near the tail, there are bars that connect to make one bar instead of splitting to 2 bars like indos.

I like the oddball bar pattern on your dats. They are kind of like loaches, I need to start looking for more of these.

I need to get my dat moved into his own tank. Right now he is sharing it with some different types of cichlids that I am trying to grow out as well. This is going to be a sllllooooooowwww contest. lol.

Yeah it's a Stripped Rapheal. One of two in with them the other is full grown at about 8 inches. There is also a Delhezi in with them at around 8 inches and a full grown Synodontis Caudalis at 8 inches as well. None of these guys have even payed any attention to the little guys so I think that they are going to be pretty safe. There are three small Clown Loaches and three Congo Tetras to help with their activity level, as I've heard that they feel safer when there are bigger fish in with them.:)

I just scored 5 more and for the best price of all....FREE!! Best of all I got to pick them out of about 40 fish so I got two with splitbars and three with three symmetrical bars, full necklace, and full belts!

So my total now is 15 small ones. I unfortunatly lost the skinniest out of the original batch of 11. I also have two larger Indos.

Im thinking of trading my 12" ornate bichir for 10 more. Should I?

In May Im picking up two 6" Pulchers....Caint wait for that!

Really back on topic, realistically and based on ones ACTUAL experience, with powerfeeding and good ( 30-50% wc every 5-7days) what kind of growth can I expect to get in 6months? A year? Right in the couple weeks Ive had them Ive noticed some good growth leading me to believe that they arent the slow growers (at this size at least) as some make them to be!

JD7.62
03-06-2007, 11:46 PM
I know he is still an Indo but he does look quit lovely! And youre right he for sure is a keeper. I also have quite a few with split bars, however only two that have split bars on both sides so they are keepers as well.

Well as far as food Im just trying to grow them up as fast as I can right now. Im using live BW since ALL of them will eat it. IVe also fed finely chopped market shrimp, frozen krill, and frozen bloodworms with some success but not every single one will eat, so for now Im just going for growth.

Im not really planning on getting them onto preard foods untill they are big enough to be free in the tank (about 3").

About 3 of the Dats are about 75% stable, mainly the larger ones, and the other 3 have been stable but not at much, i guess they need some growing, and im sure the new 55G tank will help them get some more confidence and they will stabilize.

half inch for 15 is good. buy them. i need to get actual pics, its been past the 1 month mark. 1 of mine is growing like a weed. i think the other is gettin punked or picked on cuz he's growing slower. i should put them in a smaller tank so i can concentrate on power feeding them more. there in a 60gal and there everywhere. they usually eat til the bellies are about to pop then they dont eat for like a day lol. i wanna feed them smaller portions more times a day. ill try to get pics tonight.

Have you been growing them in the containers like that all along? How big is the container? Doesnt seem like a bad idea since they are so small and it will be easier to feed and observe them this way until they get bigger.

AquataHolic420
04-01-2007, 11:18 PM
Suprised they grow so well and have such great colors in that little container. Thats a real good idea, and proves it with those pictures,

I just transferred all my Dats into a spare 55 i setup. I have 6 Indos from before, and i have 5 more baby dats i just bought and put in there as well. I am not positive on what species they are, but i think silver or indo. These guys arent stable yet, but they are feeding.

Ill get some pictures by next week.

JD7.62
04-01-2007, 11:37 PM
Their colors are actually better then when they are loose in my tank! I have found that the more I packed in their containers the more stable they would be...strange...

Now they are loose for good in my tank. They are so awesome. Every time I walk by the tank they know Im the one that feeds them even though they had never been fed in loose in the tank like that! They all swarm together and just follow me around. Its a real treat to know Im loved! LoL

Oh and BTW big Dats I feel safe to say as rule do not eat smaller ones. My bigger Indos (9" and 6") totally ignore these little guys yet theyll slam any fish small enough to put in their mouths instantly...check out my thread mini payara in the Other Monsters Forum; my big dat didnt give him a fighting chance and that fish was quite a bit bigger then these babies.

....even more excited now! I picked up a new dat at a lfs today and it is really close to looking like a widebar, but probably is just another indo. Still happy about finding some in Indy..finally. Even though they had him in brackish water. :irked:

I will get pics up as soon as I get my camera cord back. I really need to get my D50, asap.

They'll probably take it. I haven't had one yet that won't take mysis shrimp. They grow faster on blackworms though.

All these dats are looking good. I would update my original one, but I can't figure out which one it is anymore. lol

Here is the one that I found in a brackish tank. He twice the size of my others. (I am still working on getting this camera down.) That is a piece of bloodworm hanging out of his mouth.

i don't think the indo should be in the brackish water...they're fresh water fish. there's only one type of dats that live in brackish water...donno which one, but i'm sure it's not indo

Silvers like brackish. His isn't in brackish if it's in with the rest of his dats.

I will try and get some. They are a pain in the ass to try and photograph. The only time that I can get a decent shot is when I am feeding them and then the food gets in the way.

They are all doing great and about ready to move into the 150. :headbang2

Hey guys my Dat hit a growth spurt when I raised the temp to 81 and added salt. I was just doing it as a precaution against Ick, but it triggered a spurt and now he started eating frozen fish strips.

Here he is when I got him and now. Dunno I'll guess 2.5"?

thanks, I guess the mass guppy and shrimp last weekend got him going. I also moved up to 2 feedings per day and added beefheart to the menu.

so now he's nice and bright & swimmin end to end. The silver bugs him a bit, thats about the only time he hides now or goes dark.

I'll try to snap the other ng in the 30. need somethin in there to help him out. doesnt like light for nothin but luvs brichardi fry. moves to quick to get a decent hunting vid. It's like the kid from The Incredibles lol

When I first got them i was feeding them live and frozen brime shrimp until i moved them to a 75g tank. Now they're eating Futami dried shrimp, cichlid bio-gold and once in a while feeder guppys. I feed them until their stomach is full. I was kind of amaze how these guys eat for such small fish

This thing is about 2.5" now, got it at around 2".

It is fed Sinking carnivores three times a day when possible and temperature is 80 degrees. Its color has gotten a lot better since I got it three weeks ago. Its color is mostly stable during the daytime.

Look i you should be proud of the little sump dweller :) Did it have any tankmates?
