I lost all of my SW fish to disease about 4 weeks ago, I am finally restocking the fish. I even lost my prized cleaner wrasse that was eating well. I went to work with a healthy tank. I came home with all of my fish covered in marine ich (I think). The wrasse was dead, the Coral Beauty was covered, and the clownfish was diseased too. The Coral Beauty died soon after. I FW dipped the clownfish, she lived for three more days before she bit it too.

Well, I have never been one to be discouraged, and I recently started restocking my tank. All the inverts made it through fine. I added an Arrow Crab. I got a true Percula, he started off rough and wasn't eating, but is doing great now. I rescued my green banded goby from the bottom of our empty lfs sink. Everything is again going great, lets hope it stays that way. I also got some shots of my free live rock hitchikers. I have a ton of tiny snails, some brittle stars, both of which got photographed, some copepods, and possibly a very small mantis shrimp, I am hoping it isn't, I only saw it for a couple seconds.

Wish me luck, I am hoping things go better this time.

You really should use a qt tank, to avoid losing all your fish. If you do have a mantis, it may eat your goby.

My tank is the size of a quaratine tank. I will have one when I move, but for now, I have to risk it. The new fish are doing well. I picked up another Coral Beauty Angel, it's been fine for a week now.

I haven't been able to locate the creature that looks like a Mantis. I understand the kill hermit crabs, and I haven't seen any deaths, so hopefully I am good.

Ewurm, beautiful pics, watch that tank top, I had 3 aro crabs crawl out and die to death on the top of my tank. Cover what you can, they usually climb on power cords, not a major issue but just keep an eye out.

Did you get a bunch of bigger shells for the crabs? I had a crab kill a snail to get its shell, funny to see a crab in a snail shell.

There are a ton of shells, and they swap out constantly. One day, I have a nice decoration, the next day, my deco is mobile. They kill the snails anyway.

The crab shells and snail shells look totally different. Lok at a hermit crab shell, then look at a turbo snail shell.

I agree, hermits come in different shells, but I have a snail that has the same shell the hermits I buy come in. So, yes they do get their shells from snails, but they rarely are in turbo shells when you buy them.

Again ????? What is a crab shell?? All of there shells are some form of snail shell. I get what you mean about turbo snail shells being wierd but i have seen quite a few hermits using them.

All I am saying is that my hermit crab came stock with a sort of side twisted shell and he killed my turbo snail and took over the shell, just struck me as odd, like seeing a camaro with a mustang front end.

You are right, all my hermits come in those trumpet snail type shells. I think it is they take a shell that fits them, and the hermits are always small when they come in.

Most of the blue leg hermits come in cerith snail shells (the long conical shells) from the wild. I think when someone throws a bunch of turbo snails in their aquarium, they eventually die for what ever reasons. Then, the hermits take over the snail shells. I find it hard to believe a hermit can kill a healthy turbo snail and extract it from its shell.

That sucks, better luck with this one. I don't know anyone that has had a sw disease spread through their tanks, its normally just something dies and destroys everything, or have bad water (same thing i guess) or have some monster beastie in the tank eating everything. Anyway, good luck, great start!

Yeah i got ya we must just have different species around here. I havent ever really seen them in a particular type of shell they are always in all different ones.

I have seen it happen. A big crab got ahold of a snail. Turbos don't have trap doors, and the crab continued to pick at the snail until it was dead. Then, the other hermits came over to take part in the feast, and the big hermit ended up with the shell.

What did it cost you to set up your 20? I was going to buy a 29 nanocube with the built in filtration and lights but I think I can do a regular 20 myself for cheaper. what do you think?

Tank was free, Skilter was $80, Skimmer free from Tankbuster, about $150 worth of live rock, food was $20, substrate $30, stand was $20, snails, crabs, and other inverts $50, fish $200, bio spira $15, filter media $20, digital thermometer $10, hydrometer $10, salt $34
