Grab some green sunfish. Aggressive and a great tank mate for coldwater fish.

I hear green sunnies will pound the daylights out of most anything else..

It depends. I've had some that were rather good and some that were evil. Mine acted better when they were well fed.

You could also try some longears or some white cra-ppie. Dam word filter.

I have two small greenies now that I caught dipnet fishing a month ago. They are already feisty.

My point is it is very cool and they get even prettier as they grow. They will adapt well to average size tanks and starting young will learn to feed from your hand. They are a bit mean though.

dude you will think im crazy but go by the colapsable fishing rod by zebco from wallmart. real totaly sucks balls. But the rod is decent . Ive caught mad fish on mine it my spare rod i take sometimes . I used it for catching the peacocks in florida and cichlids down there . landed 23 inch bullhead cat on it. Caught many many bass on it. Freaking love it. By that rod and a decent shimano reel you be set. If you looking for local fishing spots. By a map made by adc or abc whoever it is that sell maps in every 7 eleven. Open it find you house then look for little blue wiggly lines and smallblue patchs on map there all watter locations and mostlikely got some fish

I have 3 Bluegills in with 6 Red-eared Sunfish for a year and a half. They were only 2-3 inches when I got them, but now the largest is about 7 inches and the rest in various sizes. They get along well. A lot of fake fighting to defend territory, but not much real contact. They've gotten really dark. Not much color, but I don't care about that, as this is a North American biotope setup. I'm moving them from the 90 they grew up in to a new 215 we just set up. In with them will be some Golden Shiners and a large crayfish. Plants will be water lilies and other native plants. (I had a pickerel in with them, but they eat faster then the pickerel so I ended up feeding him out of a net.)

Everything, they eat insects worms, shrimp, catfood, pellets, small fish, bread, and even "M+M"s. I dropped one in a tank accidently and it never hit bottom, they are true piggies.

im a fan of the natural setup as well. I have one big gill and three smaller ones, all caught from the local park. they have personality, and r tough. my big gill punks the pbass all the time even tho the pbass are almost 2x as big. when i get a 1000+ setup i want a whole school of bluegill, along with a few largemouth smallmouth and maybe even a striper, that would be cool.
bluegill love crickets its fun watching them come up for it

29g would do for one... 55g for a couple
they're essentially North American convicts.

You could consider them north american convicts however male bluegill can get 8"+ and weigh in at a pound. So I would say a 55 gallon tank is minimum for one. The extra swiming room in the 55 gallon would make a big difference IMO.
You could keep a redbreast sunfish in a 29 gallon for life. However bluegill, redear, warmouth etc need atleast a 55 gallon.

Sounds about right. I usually have a 4-6" one in a 5g glass jar but they get replaced every couple weeks, I put them back where I got them and get another. They go back fat and confused. I really like them, they got attitude.

id atleast set-up a ten gal. for it. putting it in a fave gallon gar just doesnt seem rite. put a lil penguin biowheel filter on a ten and some rocks w/ a few plastic plants. that would only cost about $50. ...btw, can the fish even swimm their length in the jar?
