you will have to own them to understand. they are imo one of the smartest fishes out there. it recongizes owners and know the hand that feeds them. they are always curious of new tankmates (they will always investigate new mates by sizing them up). usually when you see them at Lfs, they are not use to their surrounding so you probably see them hiding in the corner all black.

I find it EXTREMELY hard ot believe you have fish that would snap up a mature 20+ inch Datnoid... You dont like em cuz you dont have the Billlzzzzzzz$$$. Get one theyre like a dog.. i hate dogs too, Dats dont crap on the floor, but act like a dog, cant explain it.. and ofcourse when you see a dat in th store its not swimming around all joyful, Not too many Monsters are happy being in 10G tanks...its not Hype, its just Dats are the $$$$$$$$$$$hit..

Well... nice doing business huh? Did I miss something? Must have been a one-man deal on your part. Most literature online and written give max sizes as larger than what can be expected in an aquarium. 24 inches? That's why I asked for proof in the pudding.
Still nothing a 2-3 foot lungfish couldn't handle...

But in all reality - go back to my first post - I'm just wondering what everyone sees in them, that's all. Just like an oscar? Interesting. Sure, I've done the whole oscar bit many times over.

ThisIsTong
02-22-2007, 8:52 PM
yes they do get 24 inches. i have seen aobut 3 at fullsize. they are really amazing fish. expensive but worth the money. they are one of few fish that have a great personality. in my opinion oscars and dats have the most personality. some are aggresive. some arent. the ones u see in stores are stressed. once u get it into a tank and have them kickn it in there for a lil, then the personality and colors come out.

AquataHolic420
02-22-2007, 8:54 PM
Oscars are lame... You try tading in that fish when it outgrows your tank you'll get less then what you bought it for... u full grown Dat, Pulchar you can sell for hundreds...ITs a fish not meant for lame people.. so keep your lungfish, there cool too but i like the Tigers!

As far as brackish water goes, it depends on the species of dat. In brackish some do well and some dont.

If so, why have I never seen them before on here? Just the plain silver/black ones? Are the NGT's rare, then?

there are a few different dats (copied from jesse's post member icthyophile so credit goes to him for the write up).

Datnioides pulcher = widebar datnoid, aka Siamese tiger (ST) or Cambodian tiger (CT), depending on locale.

Datnioides undecimradiatus = thinbar datnoid, aka North Thailand tiger (NTT)

Datnioides microlepis = Indonesian datnoid, aka Indonesian tiger (IT)

Datnioides campbelli = New Guinea datnoid, aka New Guinea tiger (NGT)

Datnioides polota (formerly quadrifasciatus) = silver datnoid, aka American tiger (AT), even though they're from southeast Asia

the silver/black one are silver datnoid and will need brackish to thrive. the others have been known to thrive in full fw.

couple years back, NGT were one of the rarest dats but now seems more common. in terms of newly imports now, it seems like widebars are hard to come around now. indo of course is the easist to find, there are plenty of 1" that are being imported recently.

bottom line is most people who enjoyed dats are those with patience to let them get stable and comfortable to truely enjoy this fish. there are a few that try just to see what the hype is about but never really enjoy them because they end up with a unstable dat that stays dark and hides all the time. common thing.

not all dats are the same. they are have different personalities which i see in all 8 of my dats. they are always curious fish and recognize his tankmates and owner.

when i put in new fish in the tank, they dat will swim by, see it, then get this little stare down while its swims pass it slowly to the back side. then slowly move up and try to size it up to see if it food. its kind of hard to explain the personality it shows in the tank.

with fishes, you just have to try it and see. everyone likes different types of fishes for different reasons. with dats, i started out with one just to see what the hype was soon after i ended up with 8 cause i enjoyed the first one so much.
