My Salvini is starting to gain territory. How big will it get and how dominate should I expect it to get with breeding J. Dempseys in a 75 gal tank.

they get to about 8 inches and become very territorial and agressive, but not as much as the jack i would not but the 2 together because the jack will dominate.

in my experience, large salvinis would whip most dempseys of the same size. they can be pretty tough customers.

Right now my male Dempsey is the most dominate fish in the tank and when he challenges the salvini he usually wins the showdown, but the Salvini will make a quick cheapshot dart towards the Jack when the Jack swims off. I had another Salvini that used to do this to the big male Midas I used to have. Long story short, the midas killed the Salvini.

Salvini is a bigger fish than a JD, that's all there is to it. Same temperament, but bigger size and oftentimes WAY bigger teeth. I've seen some salvini with teeth so big they couldn't close their mouths.

A typical JD pair would still beat down a lone salvini, though.

ah, the blissful days of childhood, when 10gs could hold 3 pacus and an oscar, and 90gs could hold a great white shark if you added enough salt

I think that the conclusion you can draw from all the replies is put them together and see what happens long-term. If you see some serious damage to the fish then remove someone and there is a possibility they will get along and no one will kill anyone, so just wait and see. All fish are different so you can not state just by the type of fish how aggressive it will be.

Well the salvini is about half the size of the Dempsey but it seems that the salvini is showing a little more dominence day by day. For instance the salvini and the oscar are the only fish that will come up out of the water to eat krill from my finger tips. The oscar will take a big bite and pull the krill away. The salvini on the other hand will be the first to nab the krill and when it hits it hits hard. Usually the JDs act skittish until the food hits the water. Big JD about 5 inches, Salvini about 2.25 inches.

the salvini is just a little guy then, good lord. Baby fish are naturally more active than grown fish. Nothing unusual there. Now, in another 6-10 months when the salvini is 5-6", then he may full well end up laying the smack down on a lone JD. But not a pair.

hey p45. i had a dempsy that hit 10" never seen a salvini at 10". not that they couldnt. but salvini will torment most dempseys. but we all know fish are all different just like us. my 10" dempsy used to scrap down my 13"butti female and hold his own with my midas/rd mutt at 7"that took place in a 110tall. also had a lone wild green severum at 9" that used to bang the glass and make snapping sounds like he was gonna kill. he was in a 60 with a few convicts. would have made most midas guys jealous. every one i ever owned since get pushed around regardless. we are all diff.

JDs are just as capable as any other mean cichlid, its just they grow smaller... and are inbred like hell.

this pic is in one of the mods' avatars, reportedly the JD beat down that female loisellei

Wow thats a great picture. The two JD's were locked up like that once but then they fell in love and made their first fry.
