Hi y'all got me a lung just a few hours ago, it's my first, the guy sold it to me as an annectens but i think its a Protopterus aethiopicus..Its adjusted well and has already eaten a couple of feeder guppies..and is chasing around the rest, Its pretty active for a fish that they say is boring and docile:D ..here's a few pics...:)

That is indeed an annectens. And yes, some are quite active! Enjoy the fish! They grow very, very fast :)

You do know you can't have other fish with it, right? He will be approx 1 1/2 feet by his first year, so you won't have to wait very long :) I would suggest giving him a diverse variety of food. They seem to do well, and enjoy that. They do enjoy prepared foods as well (pellets, etc.)

I know that afro lungs cant do well in a comm...I'm a train him to eat non live foods too, which can be difficult cause they can go a real long time (like a couple of years)without food, im gonna try some mollusks and shellfish too..thanks for the info san, and if I do get some prob's, I know i can count on you and the other MFK'ers out there:)

They usually go for pellets/prepared foods right away - No worries there! Pellets are always the FIRST food I offer any and all new lungfish, and the only "holdout" that has not accepted any is ONE albino dolloi, out of almost 3 dozen lungfish.

Guppies, however, are a better choice of feeders, than goldfish, so good on you mate!
But most importantly - HAVE FUN!!!

Yes, "A REAL LONG TIME" as in many months... Not sure about the years bit... I am sure there have been a couple that have been estivating for a few years, but not under normal conditions. And, no, please don't try that :)

I fed him pellets and market shrimp and he ate it right away, I'm relieved that he ate them at first go, even though he just polished of 10 guppies..:)
