You know I said I bought a 4+ inch spotted gar at the same time?
Well the little channa killed it today. This little guy. About 3.5 inches.
Unbelievable. I saw the channa go for it a couple of times yesterday, but thought nothing of it, the gar just darted of, didn't think it was anything serious.
Today I came back to see the gar floating around with lacerations and blood on his side. Didn't look like a fatal wound, but was obviously enough for a baby fish.
And the little channa was still trying to bite him when he was dead :D hahahahahha.
This made me think it HAS to be an albino of a giant snakehead. I can't imagine any other type of SH being this aggressive at this size. He's tiny, looks like a tadpole. He's gonna grow into a killer.

My condolences... I actually thought about that happening in your first post. :( Juvie spotted gars are also quite sensative @t that size... tend to panic and dart around, usually ramming the sides of the tank. Perhaps that albino is a redline sh??...
HOLY ***&* !!! that is one beautiful snake!!!

looks like you made a good purchase, sorry about the gar though.

thanks guys, and yes to be honest I think this is an albino red snakehead.
The red snakehead I had when I was 10/11/12 was the most aggressive fish I've seen. And for it to be a killer at only 3.5 inches it must surely be a red.
Also - as you can see it still looks underdeveloped. If it was a smaller species of SH it would look more developed at this size and less tadpole like.

Mike has to be an albino red. Check this link out, they're selling these as albino micropeltes and mine looks exactly like this.

At least you no longer have to worry about the gar not eating.

I've never seen such an aggressive juvenile fish.
I put in a big fat molly type thing, wolf food, but I wanted to feed it today, so I kept it with the SH overnight.
The molly is almost as long as the SH, and much much fatter.
Clearly too big to be looked upon as food, but that has not stopped the SH from chasing constantly and tearing it to shreds.
I can't wait to see what this thing is like when it's an adult.
It also eats loads, almost as much as my bigger fish.

expect to have 0 tankmates if it's a micropeltes ;)

sg - I'm almost 100% sure it is. It looks exactly like that link I posted above which is an albino micropeltes.
It also looks very underdeveloped for a fish that's around 4 inches. It's also absurdly aggressive. It has to be micropeltes.
Btw have you tried any tankmates with your 2 micros?
it still could be channa striata there too are aggresive and get big. usually channa micropeltes is quite peaceful till it gets like 10"

How big do striata get?
I was thinking maybe striata until I saw the baby albino micropeltes pics, which look exactly like mine.

Well i'm sorry to hear about your Gar Rob.
Snakeheads are pure evil little ******** and it's supprising how young they are when they learn to kill like that.
It would have only happened when they got bigger unless you was to move one of them.

I figured there would not be a problem until they hit about 10-12 inches, I was planning on keeping them together until the SH became aggressive.
I really didn't expect it to become this aggressive after only 2 days.
Anymore suggestions for tankmates? :D

Nope!
But i itching 4 an aro. But they just too expensive to risk. It's a matter of time a fight broke out even if things seem peaceful at first.
Hopefully i can get one in the wild :)
Damn, i love little fish (and big) with big personality, its good when they are active too, i mean, he didnt kill the gar when the light were off did he?
That is the most frustrating thing, not knowing what your fish is really like until its too dark to see them!
But yeah, awesome fish!

How big is your tank your keeping him in ? Or did you mention in a PM that you had a pond ?
Well if you have a big enough space for them the only thing i would suggest to you would be another Snakehead keep them in a speices tank as you have found out they are extreamly agressive and don't combine well with other fish speices.
If your curious as to what it acctually did to you gar check out Raymans video footage of his snakehead and thats what it did to your gar !

and albinos are supposed to be quieter and less aggressive!
hahaha... tt puts an end to that myth.

09-08-2005, 9:20 AM
seriously? Why are albinos meant to be less aggressive?

that i do not know... something to do with the breeding genetics.
anyway the albino SH here aren't aggressive like yours... quite calm and gentle...
actually that looks like an albino striata rather than a red.. even the link you posted is a pic of an albino striata.. they probably mis-labeled it.. another way to id them is striatas mostly stay at the bottom of the tank while red/giant's usually at the top ;)

ive foung most of the larger snakeheads to be aggresive to simaler looking fish, i had a channa maurilus with a spotted gar both were small only 5" and the channa would bully the gar all day so obvioulsy i moved into my only availiable a pair of jags supprising the channa survied about 4 months befor it jumped out. i now have a nother channa maurilus in a crowded comm with the same gar an no problems both fish are about 9" my green 4" green terror keeps the channa in check . i also have a 13" channa aurantimaculata that at one point wouldn't tolerate tankmates but i had to add him the the comm and now he's in a crowded space he's calmed alot. What im trying to say you give a larger species of channa a tank with one tankmate im guessing it will try an kill it. Ive had sucess with small channa's like blehri and bankenisis with where the blehri wouldn't even touch feeders i put in an the bankenisis was far from aggresive.
also where did you get the albnio channa im from the uk as well

He actually stays at the top most of the time. He likes to sit on top of the filter and stuff.
its probably still channa striata, micropetes are more free swimming. you'll probably have to wait til its a little larger for a positive id
rumblesushi

its not constantly swimming but it's a pretty active fish. Darts around a lot, comes to the glass, sits on things. Chases anything you put in with it :D
If it is a striata, how big do they usuallly get in an aquarium? And what are they like temperament-wise compared to micropeltes?
PS - I got it in a place in East Grinstead. They'd only had it a day.

the molly looked nothing like the SH, yet my little channa tore it to shreds :D
Even attempted to grab it by the tail and do the alligator death roll, but it didn't last long, the tail was too thin and the molly was too heavy :D
tbey get like 3 foot in the wild so im guessing around 2 foot in captivity, till a nasty fish, chose tankmates wisely they'll need to be ablle to look after themselves but bear in mind your fish will be long a thin for quite some time

Maybe mine is a striata but it actually looks more like a micro. It has a big head and big eyes in comparison to the body.
Monster - that actually seems like quite a slow growth rate for a fish that gets to like 3 foot. How big was he when you got him?

damn my wolf has suddenly turned nasty. He's about 8 inches now and has become aggressive. He's now being hostile to all the tankmates, including his friend the bichir who he usually lets reside in his cave.
I need to move the 8 inch bichir and 6.5 inch hujeta out of the tank.
The only other tank I have is the one with the little albino snakehead.
Is it worth the risk of putting those 2 with the little SH? Do you think a bichir/hujeta of that size would kill the SH? The SH is approx. 4 inches but skinny.
The only other option I have is sell them.

It was 12" when I got it, like 4 months or so. Albino's are the bad blood lines and
this one might be a dwarf.

I thought convicts were meant to be tough and fearless?
I put a 2 inch convict in with this little channa and the channa is terrorizing it. The convict doesn;t even attempt to fight back, just gets chased around.
The little channa is also terrorizing some big african tetras, 2 fat 4 inch goldfish, and a 4 inch hujeta.
It gets the tetras in his mouth, shakes them around a bit, and spits them out.
Cool fish.

I've never owned a convict before but I think they are pretty damn funny actually.
this puny little convict sneaks up behind goldfish that are 4x his size and starts RATATATTAT biting their tails :D
the only fish that has escaped the terror of my little channa is a raphael catfish. Cute fish.
I had a Convict that would rear up at my 14" african SH. Balls as big as church bells as they say.
Until one night the SH disided to eat him, I was convinced he was too big.
