I am currently taking input on redecorating my brackish tank and have heard alot about having sand as a substrate instead of gravel. Like the idea but have heard many comments of algea/fungus growing in the sand and was wondering what precautions you can take to keep it from forming/growing? Also how do you clean sand. With the gravel i just use a suction hose for all excess food not eaten and cleaning purposes. With the same hose i would think sand would just get sucked right up too. Or what about crushed shells/coral? Or is that only for salt tanks?

Sorry i have a rambling problem, i know. But any and all help would be appreciated.

crushedcoral might work. it would buffer you pH so keep that in mind. with the sand you vacuum just above the surface of the sand . low enough to pickup poo, high enough to not pick up a lot of sand. sand tanks also look really good, and in my opinion are worth the vacuuming hassel.
