Thanks. I got them for free from one of my fish buddies. He could not house them anymore. They grew about 1" and developed a hump within a week in my 240g tank. Jeff Rapps sells them about $25 per fish at this size.

Nice fish. I just lost my 14 year old devil while I was away on vacation in Peru. He jumped out of the tank and the house sitter didn't even notice it. My friend that was taking care of my tanks found him. I plan on getting another one soon. Good luck and remember to give em lots of krill. It brings the colors out.

Thanks for all the nice comments. Hikari gold plus, Hikari complete, blood worms, shrimps, spirulina pellets, and Tetra color bits. Mix all of them together and feed them to my fish.

CentralMayhem,

Yours is a female and yours looks like a skinny version of my female. Btw, nice fish! Does she have a mate? Her breeding tube is coming out.

hahahahahahah. dude its a male gimme a break hahahahahahah. i think you need to do a little more research on your devils. his breeding tube is out all day every day. true devils are thinner in profile and have thicker and different shaped lips, they are more pointy. not trying to belittle you, but i know that my fish is an f1 devil male, and yours is definitely not a devil from rapps stock. even if he personally sent it to you i dont think he shipped the right fish if you asked for the devil instead of a midas. that is not a pure devil from rapps' stock, i have seen quite a few. id check with your source and let them know. very nice fish though, im not trying to put you or them down. happy fishkeeping

Dude, your male has a big a$$ venting tube. Has he bred for you yet? I have bred some CA cichlids before especially vieja family and FHs. From my experience, the male usually has a small and pointy venting tube whereas female has a fat and round venting tube.

Anyway, I know exactly where I got my fish from. So, there is no point in debating whether they are red devils or not. BTW, we are doing a group order from Jeff Rapps in Socal and you are welcome to join us. The dead line is September 16th.

CentralMayhem

well i am gonna order from him soon as is. thanks for the offer though.but if someone told you those were 100% labiatus id ? them. most male fish can be kept in a constant state of reproductive readiness. i have seen NUMEROUS males with huge tubes hanging out. he is full of testosterone and fiery as hell. most males if NOT ready to breed will have a thin point at the vent area where a female will have nothing till ready to breed where once shes done it recedes back inside of her. my male and other males before him, not just devils, but most cichlids ive kept have shown this trait. not all but quite a few. if kept in ideal breeding conditions, a lot of male fish will have their vent out and swollen at all times.

I completely agree with Central Mayhem - I would be SHOCKED if they were 'Red Devils', and not midas.

I think the question is how pure the midas is. Post some head profile shots, especially head on with the fish looking down. I personally find this the most accurate way.

As for Rapps, he sells both Red Devils/ Midas. With that being said, I doubt he would pusposefully ship incorrect fish, but mistakes happen. As well, most people talk about Red Devils and encompass Midas under Red Devils, so perhaps your friend thinks they are the same. It is not even a 'noobish' thing to do. I didn't know myself until about 4-5 years ago, and I have been keeping 'Red Devils' in one take or another just shy of 20 years :)

If you want, post some head shot pics and we can all debate it with a bit more accuracy, me thinks..

How old is your fish? I am curious how quickly red devils grow.
