From the picture:
This White Shark was caught off the coast of Cuba in the mid 1940's. It weighed an incredible 7,100 pounds and measured a length of 21 feet. To Date It Is The Record Catch.
What a waste, today it is a rare sight to see such a huge Great White.

Well hopefully they at least ate it or did something with it rather than just let it go to waste.

Did you know in reality that shark was never actually weighed.I've seen it many times before. The weight is a guess and even its length is aparently questionable. But still has recognition as the largest one caught.
greenterra i have also heard that before. Either way, thats one fat ass shark

There was a live 20ft female sighted off Hawaii within the past 2 years.
There also have been Great Whites reportedly sighted off Mexico as large as 21 ft(about 6.5 meters). And some sighted off Australia & South Africa as large as 23-24 ft(about 7.0 -7.4 meters).
The one caught off New York on Rod & Reel was only about 17ft (about 5 meters), and weighted something like 2,600-2,800 lbs.
By the the largest Great Whites that ever lived where truely "JAWS" size, about 30 ft (just over 9 meters) long. They lived about 1-2 mya, based on the size of the fossilized Great White teeth(the teeth were about 3-3.5" long).

Most Shark Paleonotogists presently tend to classify the Megalodon as a Large Mackeral Shark, but not directly related to the modern Great White(Carcharodon carchrias).
The Modern Great White, is actually part of the family of "broad-toothed" Makos. Which is actually a fairly young branch of the mackeral shark family(less than 30 myo).
While the Megalodon(Carcharoles megalodon), is thought to come from an older branch, of more basal mackeral sharks, possible closer related to salmon or probeagle sharks. And the Meg's direct line may date back more than 60 -70 myo.
Megs aren't Great Whites. And it's thought that Great Whites may have helped to cause the extinction of the Megalodon. Adult Great Whites may have out competed young Megs for their main source of food, (in this case small marine mammals, like seals, & sea lions). The less bulky Great Whites may have been faster, and able to catch them better.

Everytime I tell people I want to swim with great whites they refer back to JAWS...I'm like OH GIVE ME A BREAK!

I know what you mean. I used to have to clean a tank with black tips in it and people always said I was nuts. I tried to explain that sharks aren't the killing machines that people think of them as, its just they got a bad rep. Your more likely to die from a lightning strike then a shark attack, but people still go out in lightning storms all the time, but are afraid to swim where sharks are.

I agree totally... but still am VERY aware when in the ocean. I had a creepy experience in Galveston once. I was about waste deep in what is basically lake water... you can't see anything. I was walking out to where my friends were... on a sandbar (which is a HORRIBLE place to hang out). I got abou t1/2 way there and bait fish started jumping out of the water around me... I stood there perfectly still for about ten seconds... then very slowly went back to shore. Side note... there was a jack-ass wade fishing where people were swiming!

come to cape town after you see te grate white sharks that swim around there you won't feel the same when you go into the ocean again.when you see 1 of them breach to hit a seal you will s$&t yourself.

Oh wow... yea.. if anything was around me it was a Bull Shark... I can't imagine a porker. I don't think too many of those frequent Texas waters. You don't surf there do you! Has one breached while you were in the water.. and why were you swiming around seals???? :)

I've seen that pic of the surfer before... wondered if it was a fake. The dorsal looks awfully sharp for a silhoette. If it is real... I would have caught the next wave in! I hate to see those pics of carcasses mutilated... pretty sad to see that we still need to cut the teeth out of our oceans apex predators.
I'm no photography expert, but that surfer sure looks like he is putting on the brakes! Its pretty tough to get that much of your body out of the water... I agree the jaw souvenir pic is pretty rough, but shark finning is drastically more cruel & much more common. They just haul the shark in, cut off all it's fins & tail, then dump it back in the water to sink & drown or be eaten alive. Horrible. Also, I have caught more sharks in and around Galveston Bay & just offshore than I care to think about. Many of those were Hammerheads & Black Tips, not just Bulls, though. I no longer wade into the water, unless I can see my feet. I'd much rather be in scuba gear & able to see & react. Unless I'm diving, I'll be on da boat thanks.

The pic with the surfer is not a shark. It appears to be a dolphin. Curved dorsal fin and horizontal tail fin.

I just got back from the newport aquarium in newport, ky and they have a full size painting of it on a wall there...it is HUGE...but like greenterra said the length is questionable...they said it was 23 feet long

I have some pic.
That one on the sling (second row) is a Tiger shark. You can tell by the snout and iconic tooth shape. One upside down on top row is a large Mako.

Yeah, dorsal is to crescent shaped for a shark. Still not a silhouette i want to see when surfing... even though dolphins are friendly, that shape can easily be mistaken.

When I went on x-mas vacation this past year we rented a place in cocoa beach. Me and my sister spent an entire day in the water (eyes sharp for the portuguese man-o-wars that were all beached) anyway we had a grand ol time...so the next morning my parents went for an early morning stroll on the beach and ended up talking to a lady who was shark fishing...anyway this lady said if you had been in the water the day before you were more than likely no more than 20ft away from a shark at any given time. I can't remember what kind she said...but I had to pick my jaw up off the floor.
Not too much of an incredible story but it's my only close call I have had haha
