My Datnoid is a sissy.

My NTT used to come out all the time but now hides all day long. Every now and again I'll catch him chasing a shrimp but for the most part he's invisable. Any one elses act like this?

Dats are not a shoaling species of fish, they like to chill out and wait for food. Mine likes to hide sometimes, but if you want to have your Dat come out feed him his favorite food, then youll see him and he'll be happy too. or take his hiding spot or territory spot, but thats weak.

wonderful question because i need to know too. i recently bought 3 of them, 2 out of 3 are very active and playful. 1 hides alot, and rarely comes out to chase the brine i feed them. i mean he'll eat but not like how the others go and chase them down. he'll stick to his hiding spot and only eat what is near.

so should i remove his hiding spot or leave it??? i only had them for almost 2 weeks now.

Try more then one food source.. maybe while the other fish get the usual food, AKA the brine you can slip in some earthworms for the other guy. My NTT's LOVE earthworms and dillies. Dats like to chill out.. Id say just watch the 2 that come out.. and make sure theyre not beating up the hider...or sell it to me!:headbang2 :headbang2

thanks for the pointers. they play chase once in awhile. he is the one the chases them when ever they get to close to his SPOT!

One thing that heled me out is to work around it. I put all the hiding spots in he front of the tank ;) So my 9"er likes to chill in the front of the tank under the wood. Just keep the back of the tank pretty open and put the hiding spots in plane view :grinno:

Yeah , if they can't hide they tend to get brave pretty quick. They have great personality once they lose fear!!

just give them some time... my 10" wb has his periods. normally hes very outgoing and active but sometimes he gets spooked by the eel or something else and becomes less active and is more hiding. this takes a couple of days and then everything is back to normal. i can imagine smaller dats take longer periods to feel comfortable (again).

they are about 1" and i have them in a 30 gal and was planning to transfer them to a 55 gal soon. should i just wait until transfer to the new tank where i wont have as much hiding space, or should i go ahead and remove his favorite hiding spot? i apologize for jacking this thread but im pretty new to raising dats and really want to become succesful about it. and you can count on more questions from me, apologies in advance for any stupid questions i may ask.

i got them from mililani pets for $15.99 a pop. i bought the last 3. they supposed to let me know if they get any more, which is cool with me because im trying to get ahold of a 180 gal.


okay heres the deal. out of the 3 i have 1 seems to be a real bully, atleast i think. he's the one always chasing them, is this normal?

My tank always has food in it cause I always have live ghost shrimp in it for my bichirs to eat. My NTT is rarely ever seen. He hides in some weird spots... The fish is only about 2 inches and hes in a 120g with a 8" ornate a 7" senegal and a 6" delhezi. Maybe thats why he hides... Before I got the othe 2 bichirs he was all over that tank with the 1 Ornate.
