I've seen a few Mbu's and I've noticed what seems to be two different morphs. I've seen all mottled tan and black, and what I'm calling banded. Anyone know anything about patterns on these guys? Here some pics of mine, you can see three bands of black, 4 if you count where the tailfin starts. I havent found a lot of info on these guys past basic maintenance and size and I'm curious if distinct morphs exist.

I think it's just a matter of the environment they're in. My mbu when on black substrate was fully patterned. When I switched him to white, he exhibited more of the banding that you are describing.

My only comparison has been between the Mbus they get at my lfs and mine but both are on a similar substrate. How quick did yours change?

I had mine with a white sand substrate and he would continuasly changed his pattern depending on his mood.

Was it something you could see happening or was it more gradual over time?

It just happens from time to time with mine. I think it's to do with the mood of the fish. Sometimes during growth spurts I have noticed fading of the pattern. :)

Are we talking about a fading and darkening of a pattern that stays constant or an actual change of pattern?

The pattern varies day to day....It was darker when it was on the dark substrate. Now it varies a lot more.

I'm still confused. Is the pattern staying the same but changing in how light or dark it is or is it actualy changing. Are there white spots that turn dark or is it more along the lines of brown spots turning black?

i had a mbu in the past for about a year. and basically the this is what there saying(i think) the pattern remains the same but the darkness and lightness of the lines will sometimes lighten up and sometimes darken up. same for mines. mine was usually light because i had white sand. but time to time the lines would be a solid black and would look like an insane maze. my current one has more stable black lines.
