this may be a stupid question, but are they still mean when raised in captivity from a hatchling? i know in the wild hey are mean as hell. ive tangled with some very large ones.

No mean attitude with this guy that i detect.. when i pick him up i just keep my fingers and hand away from his face.. i can pick him up and point him towards his food{they have poor eyesight} then he will see his food and snap away.. when doing a water change we lift him out put him in bucket and then put him back.. no mean attitude at all..but i would not wave my fingers around his face ..he would think it was food..;)

I learned not to put my hands in front of a snapper when I was little...;)
I touched him with a wooden broom handle and he snapped it in half..it looked just like your baby, RD.

Ive had an ALMOST horrible encounter with an alligator snapper!!!
About 2 years back (when i was like 10) i was about to jump in the creek for a summer swim and looked down and was petrified by what i saw:(
i saw an alligator snappers head sticking out of the water about 6 inches away from my bare feet!:WHOA: and this wasnt any lil guy either THE biggest ive seen to date.... his head was fist sized!! and i have yet to swim in that creek to date... But the other day me and my buddy were looking for turtles and snakes and some other stuff and i found a baby alligator snapper..... so my friend has him for the time being.....

I am not sure what species of snapper we have here in MN, but while on Vacation at Lake Bemidji, I saw one in the harbor that was bigger than a toilet bowl. It was monstrous.

so he is not friendly...but also not quite as mean as they are in the wild?
you guys are crazy! biting broom handles in half? :nilly:
they usually can even bite sticks in half.
Do they spend much time out of water liz?

he is never out of water.. i thought his shell and rough skin would be water logged after awhile.. made an island for him..he prefers to be in the water..:)

Mean...no.
Will a captive raised snapper act like your finger is a meal....YEP!
Had two that were 10" and 16" from front to back. Raised from hatchlings. You wouldn't be able to tell them from wild based on eating habits! ;)

what did you use to feed your guys..what happened to them..is it true you can never release back in the wild once you domesticate them?;)
