Ok so i got a new stingray(sold to me as a laticep) thats about 6 inches and is in a 30gallon temporary tank. Im a bit concerned because ocasionally he swims around in circles going upside down then back but sometimes he lands with his bottom facing up. Is this normal for them to do? As far as water params everything is good and ph is at about 6.7.

He also recently got himself stuck to the bottom of the powerhead which i have delt with by putting a sponge on it and am treatin the woud. For some reason tho he keeps insisting on going to that one side of the tank even tho i have put my driftwood that was originally on the left side to the right. He wont even consider going to the left side. After the powerhead incident hes been swimin around but then will land upside down and stay there for a little. Now he just has the powerhead pushing him up against the driftwood and just seems really restless. Ive turned off the powerhead but i dont want to leave it off because its mostly how the tank gets oxegenated. I just hope i dont lose him.

I don't want to upset you but, that is not normal and it is not a good thing.

Bump your temp up to 85 and make sure that you are doing daily 25% - 50% water changes.

Something is wrong with your ray.

Thats isnt normal at all.

Did you Acclimatize the ray into your tank ?

yup took me almost 2 hours, but the thing is that i didnt have a tube to make a drip so i just used a cup and added water slowly. i hope this isnt the reason y its messed up but seems like the only thing i can think of. damn, its just laying on its back right now.. this sucks man

I had a ray that flipped on its back and that was because of an internal parasite all thanks to some goldfish that i fed it. I got back to normal by using parasite clear tablets by jungle and know i dont even think about using goldfish anymore so that is whats problably wrong with your ray, just a thought. btw has it gone pale at any moment?

It should but i have never used it, and before you do use it you might want to make sure its a parasite. Do you feed you rays goldfish and is the rays pigmentation getting pale like little white spots all over it?

well the thing w/ feeders is that i had some in there for my payara so it mit have gotten a hold of one. He had like a little whitish shade next to his eye but it looked looked like nothing. It was actually starting to get nice color and show its spots before it started flipin out. Also it wasnt shipped, i bought it from a store and drove it back to my place so i duno what could have happend..

btw is there even a stingray called a laticep cuz i couldnt find anything about it..

Laticeps are generally reticulata (magdalenae).

I agree with DW. Ammonia poisoning...

You might want to get the fish out of the bag as quickly as possible. To make things complicated. the second you open the bag your exchanging CO2 gas for O2 which raises the pH, that and the combined effect of raising the temperature causes the ammonia to have a higher ion charge making it more lethal. In retrospect a ray that was shipped properly and acclimated properly isn't going to give a rats arse about the pH of your water.

Next time prepare your tank to about 70f which is the temp most fish will be recieved at. once the ray is in there go ahead and crank the temperature. that will slowly allow the ray to adjust to that.

yeh thats weird that u say that because the guys at the store gave me a discount for him so i wonder if they knew this and just wanted to get rid of him.. but the thing is that at the store he was eating and seemed ok.
