The Brasilian government deemed the collection of zebras illegal.

They are being captive bred, but I don't think it's being done commercially. If you check www.aquabid.com, zebras will pop up every now and then. All captive bred... and all ungodly expensive: i.e. $100-$200 per fish. I like zebras, but there are plenty of other plecos I'd like to work with just as much for significantly less initial outlay.

Also, I'm not sure if it's permanent. From what I've been able to gather, Brasil has been cracking down on the exportation of its fish stocks, but I can't really list specifics off the top of my head.

Similar experience in the UK. Can't import them but can get home breed.

I've seen them for £250, about 455 of your US dollars.

In Holland there pretty common, not that there everywhere but you can get your hands on some fairly easy. There still expencive though, around a €100,- I think. But maybe I can get them cheaper through that friend of mine. He doesn't ship (anyway that what he sad 3 months ago).

Come to think of it, will they be okey witch bichir, or is it a risk not worth taking?

The risk is not worth taking. In my opinion, these are show fish. It is best to keep them to themselves without having other creatures that will pick on them.

I had a breeding group before and kept them on their own in their own tank. I was not able to breed them but was able to sell them to some chinese businessmen for a wopping US$ 250 a piece. During those times, they were hard pressed to find here in Manila and practically everywhere. Singapore, Germany, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the US didn't have them at one point.

Mike D.

Hiya brandy, welcome to MFK.
Plecos are so numerous and so often similar to each other and sharing the same common name that they have been given classification #s so people can tell exactly which pleco they are refering to, or at least that was what was explained to me.
Riverwonders has L066 available for $39
I think when I am in the market again that is what I will buy,
Riverwonders wants $199 for zebra plecos.

L46 are very threatened from the wild by loss of habitat. They are only found in one small region.
They are also very hard to catch

Dont you have a couple David?
