This was my first attempt at building a stand.
Heres the inner frame,(Ithink i made it a lil beefier than needed) all 2x4 an 2x6.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/joeytoe/FishTank%20Stand/DSC00025.jpg
I put a 3ft Fluorescent Fixture on the inside. long with a duplex GFI recepticale attached to a 10Ft grounded Extention cord an 2 6 plug power strips(1 on each side). An added 3/4 plywood on the top an back.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/joeytoe/FishTank%20Stand/DSC00001.jpg
I sheeted it with 1/2" cabinet grade oak plywood, an oak boards for the Trim around the top bottom an corners.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/joeytoe/FishTank%20Stand/DSC00011.jpg
I put 10 coats of Satin Poly on the outside Which got it to the color I wanted it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/joeytoe/FishTank%20Stand/DSC00010.jpg
An I installed a bit of 1/2" PVC on the inside an comming out the back for my air system.

that's a great looking stand. I can't figure out why you wanted the light inside the cabinet for though, is it just there so you can see inside when looking for things?
I imagine that when I move into my own house I will be building many more stands, and I'll probably go with oak plywood for my next one.

In total after acouple screw ups with the nice Plywood I ended up at close to 400.00, in Lumber an various lil things that I didnt have at my house.

The light was pretty much as you said so I can see things when im inside(like if i need to work on the pvc air setup) an also to prove to my friend (that I bought the tank from) that you can have a light in the stand.

That stand is nice! Much better then the ones I see for sale at pet stores.

09-14-2005, 7:10 PM
Yes its sooooooooo much better than 99% of the Prefab stands at pet stores, for many reasons.
Like its not made of Partical board(which Absorbs water like a sponge).
I put the PVC air system in, which if need be can be expanded to add more air stones or whatever.
Plus I think itd easily survive a grenade being set off inside it, hahaha.

Well without my Finish plywood mistakes, Id say around 250-300. In retrospect I shouldve used 3/4" instead of 1/2" as 3/4" is more widely used an cheaper. Plus Lowes stuff is higher priced than HDepot an only lowes had 1/2" .
I couldve built it cheaper but I wanted to make sure thered be no catastrophy once the tank was on it an filled.

LOL! and to think that houses are only made of 2x4's. you could park a hummer 2 on that thing. My buddy is a carpenter and he milled down 2x4's to 1x3's and put his 90 gal on it. with 2x6's you could probably put 5 or 6 125 gal tanks on it.
(Chevy truck commercial plays) Like a rock. Ooooh Like a rock.

I wish I were more like you. build it once and not worry about it ever again! do you have a power stripe built into the back of the stand? it will make it easier to plug the wires and disconnect them if you need to. you can place it high enough so that you get the hanging loop for the elec. wires too.

I put two power strips on the inside an plugged them into a GFI attached to a 10Ft indoor/outdoor extension cord.
it looks very well made and looks like birch ply which cuts easier and leaves less splinters.
i built a stand myself for another tank i had i enjoyed it.

Birch ply does look Similar to Oak ply just a wider grain on it. Building stuff is fun, Of course that if you enjoy working with your hands.

Yeah, I think it's safe to say you over built the stand, but the piece of mind is definitely worth it. Personally, I'm going to use the frame plans from this site : http://www.arbreptiles.com/cages/75g_stand/index.shtml , and steal your idea for the exterior and the door.

Everything looks great (here it comes) BUT... I would have used nicer hinges. The ones on there remind me of an old grandma's kitchen. hate to sound so harsh but its what i think of when i see those hinges. Everything else about the stand is super nice!

I'd build a really tall tank to put on top of it. It's not gonna fall over or buckle from weight. That thing is beefy!

I have a feeling it could easily do the job 2-3 times over.
It will definatly hold some weight. Why the 3ft light inside

The room the tank is in is dark at times, so it makes it easier to do things inside the stand.

Ya I acounted a extra 3"s in my original blue prints for a light. At forst i was going to use a 2 ft one, but the 3ft ones were on sale so I choose that one.
