My sump plans... Please review?

looks good. should trap micro bubbles. Looks like you can move a lot of water. But, it seems a little big for a 55 gallon. :D

are you making it? I have done some acrylic work in the past. It is easier than it first looks. I am glad your going for it. It is rewarding to do it yourself.

lol, yeah it's going to be attached to 4 tanks with a total of 800 gallons.

Only 4" of above water bio media doesn't seem like it would be enough.
1/3rd submersed, 2/3rds emersed is what I've read is a good ratio.

Infact having it all emersed would be good too, but would create extra noise.

Otherwise it looks to be a great layout.



Also, make sure you have enough room for bio media, more is almost always better.

Yes, I agree.. But the back room where the sump is going is 4' wide and the skimmer (6' Top Fathom 8a) only fits in the room with the drain on that end so I had to make room for the return.. Oterwise I would have had it a full 18 x 24 I could or out with it more and just move the 4" space down to the rest of the return area.. hmmm

Don't discount Militantpotato's observations. I am seeing the same problem. Since there isn't a description of the operation and intended media for each compartment, I am assuming a right to left flow beginning with the wet/dry compartment. As Militant pointed out, the baffles will keep the wet/dry media completely submerged. If that is the intention, just eliminate that compartment and go with a wet sump design. It will give you more space for added media. However, you are better off lowering the baffles to allow the wet/dry compartment to function as a wet/dry.

What are your intended medias for each compartment? Where are you going to have the mechanical filtration take place?

Oh, guess it helps to have all the input, and a drawing to scale with legends (just noticed your 10" baffle is 16" high :grinno: )
