Egg Crate and some PVC Pipe? I have heard people lay nylon screen over the egg crate for more efficent filtration. Never made my own but that is what I hear works good.
I have seen these DIY plans for an undergravel filter.
Find yourself some fiberglass perforated 'siding/shingles'.. You know, the stuff they put on roof that is wavey like a ruffles potato chip. Then take a saw and cut a number of slits going the opposite direction of the grooves. Drill holes in the corner, and add a PVC attachment. Easy and Cheap, especially for a huge tank!
Good Luck!
I have used egg crate covered in garden shade mesh, and drilled 1/2" pvc pipe with power heads in several tanks, since I don't cover the entire tank floor with it I add a lip of glued on plastic cut from a storage tub to close off the edges. DYI lets me make odd sizes and shapes.
