Convicts, and all you need is a 20 gallon hell they'll breed in anything.

Convicts was gonna be my reccomendation as well. I see them breeding in crappy aquarium store tanks all the time. Start breeding early too.

I have a very similar opinion, though I generally characterize it by saying that they'll multiply in a toilet bowl.

Convicts are so easy to breed its not even funny. I have seen them breed as small as 2". Midas Cichlids are also very easy to breed but need way more room.

who the hell didnt know the answer to this ?. i mean if you dont know that convicts rule hands down as far as ease of breeding goes. i have seen 1.5" female convicts breeding regularly. as long as you have both sexes, they WILL breed. how about someone do an experiment and see if you can get them NOT to breed. hahahah

I read in a aquarium mag. that they have been known to breed in shipping bags.

That is just crazy :WHOA: I have seen them trying to breed in 5 gallon buckets that were unheated.

Convicts are probably the easiest and maybe the most prolific but I have brichardi and there are probably the one of the easiest because you dont have to move them and they will continute breeding even with the slightly older babies still in the tank, and the older babies actually look out for the smaller ones as well its kinda cool... But sexing these guys can be difficult theres not really a sure way of sexual distinction, but you maybe able to vent them... Although I dont know because they are small so you might not be able too...

How fast do they grow??? what is a good male to female ratio???? I am trying to find good feeders to breed but i have bad luck with livebearing fish

Another vote for convicts, they breed like crazy.not sure if id use them for feeders, with that stiff dorsal fin,you run the risk of a fish choking on one, imho.

I have a pair of N. brichardi...well, I had. Broken heater cooked them. They only bred twice and both times produced only one fish...weird. I still have the little ones and just bought a male, I think I will be getting a pair as soon as one of the fry gets breeding size. He has not killed them yet so thats a good sign. My old male killed 4 females till he found the right one. I notice males have longer dorsal and anal fin trailings...much longer. Hard to see at the LFS but after you have em a while they grow really long. They also are larger in my experiance.

Don't forget to add the rainbow cichlids. They can have different age fish in the tank also. :D

CONVICTS MAN!! Just buy 3 and put them in a small tank. I had them years ago and it only took 2 months for them to breed. They need a flat rock and sponge filter and I didn't have a heater in there. I also have yellow labs (L. Caeruleus) that breed in 2 months as well. But they only gave me 7 fry, the convicts gave me ~25 or so in the first clutch. good luck.

Well you can sure as hell rule out Lugubris pike cichlids...lol.....seems almost impossible to get them to breed!

Convicts of course.. they'll even breed if seperated into 2 cups, one female in one, the male in the other. That is a hyperbole, though..

Before the Convict Cichlid was widely known as the easiest to breed cichlid, there was another 'beginning' breeding cichlid. The Blue Acara is also a very easy cichlid to breed, as is most of the fish in the aequidens family. If you can find a pair, you should try it, as they are alot less aggressive than convicts and have a great personality for a community tank..

I've tried for a few months to get my cons to breed. I have them in a 30G by themselves. They have a 4in clay pot in there, as well as the small round base for the pot. They have paired nicely, making me think at any moment there will be eggs, but just haven't seen any.

I tried breeding Kribensis, but it didn't work and one died and the female was eaten.

kribs are good but they dont live long if they breed alot and dont lay as many eggs as convicts

blue acaras also good

but the best is definiatly the convict

breeds in a 10 gallon
breeds w/o a heater or light grows faster w heat
breeds every 30 days if seperated from eggs
my 4" pair lays 200 eggs at a time
90% egg fertilization
easy to raise the fry
works great as feeders for me
fry grow to about an inch in less than 6 months

remember growth depends of feeding and temp

but and ciclid is easy to breed if provided with a good size tank and no rough tankmates
raising the fry is what i am having trouble with
