Love plecos! I once had a 110 gallon with about 100 lbs of african root wood and about 20 some plecos. Everything from a zebra, snowball, leopard acanthicus the big boys, 2 emeralds, a scarlet, hystrix, goldy, pelegrinni, leopardus and more. One of my favorite tanks ever.

i was a pleco fanatic once and bought a lot of exotics but i slowly had to sell them due to space constraints for my real favorites which are monster fishes :d.. i left some though, i still have my L27, LDA33, L128 and adonis pleco :)

Hi! I m a pleco die hard in Singapore and my fish room is dedicated mostly to plecos. I have friends are are as crazy over those critters too. Currently I have a 6 ft tank housing Pseudacanthicus species and another two 4 footers housing panaques and many others. Planning to add more tanks to my fish room soon.....

I love plecos but unfortunately most are illegal here so i dont get to keep many exotics. The ones that are available are all AU$500 or more

I love exotic plecos, especially the big ones. It's unfortune they usually run so high in price, for a fish that isn't as active as most. I can get some large and rare ones, anybody want me to share pics? ;)

I wish Plecos and Rays were more compatible..

I also noticed most fish keepers go with Rays as a bottom dweller to the aro/dat monster tank. I have yet to see someone with a nice collection of Monster Plecos in these big tanks!

I love plecos! I have had so many different kinds...I really love those little guys....I did have a SAILFIN GIBBACEP, she was about 13 - 14 inches when she died...I still do not know what killed her, the lfs guy said she may have had to much protein...? But I replaced her with an 8" WHITE-SPOT PLECO....really beautiful pleco....

Miles

Yep.. Albino Adonis Pleco..

We can get smaller ones, but they aren't cheap.. We have been offered 12-14" albinos, but due to their rarity, even *I* as an importer would have to pay close to $1000 for one. Crazy huh? You know what's funny however, the oriental importers we work with will snatch one up at that price in a heartbeat. American importers cringe at the thought..

Fish go where the market is. Most of the pleco people I know only want BN pleco's not the meat eating 48" pleco with lyre's and armor like a tank. They consider them status symbles over there and would give a left nut to get one.

fi, fi, fi, fi, FIFTY POUND A YEAR!!!!!????????

Tell me about it! The sludge and sawdust in the prefilter always looks like yesterdays coffee grounds. I stopped selecting driftwood pieces by their looks a long time ago. Now, I just select for bulk. He also eats almost a 5lb bag of potatoes a month besides his regular feedings of 4oz of rabbit pellets, 1oz of earthworm sticks, frozen peas, frozen beans, banana, and kiwi he gets on a daily basis. I'd curb his diet except for the fact I want to see just how big he'll grow to. He's almost at the 19" mark now.

Very nice. Panaques are among my favorites. There's a seller on Aquabid selling "Violet Royals" by the name of "Ffn." Did you get your Violets through him? I'm assuming you're the same Oddball as the auctions, but I just wanted to make sure. I'm considering buying some fish from him, but first-hand experiences are always appreciated.

as you can imagine Hard algea eaters are hard to keep fed, however are usually the last to starve. it's funnie. throw a peice of zuchini in a tank with three diff pleco's in them. one pleco will eat the outside, the other the soft seed guue and the other the meat. they all have different preferences.

Otto's are great little fish, I haven't seen a spot of algae since. I want some zebra otto's, i've seen some great pics.

I would really like some zebra plecs but they are very expensive over here now, my LFS has them at £245 not sure how many $'s that is. Ban on exporting them from Brazil.

Inspired by this very thread I am going to pick up a pair of L128's 'Blue phantom plecs' on the weekend for my Amazon setup. Does anyone know of an easy way to sex them?, It would be nice to try and breed them.

Plecos are my favorites. Had a blue eyed that I gave away to a friend because I had to move. Got him at a fish store on 14th street in NYC for $20 bucks (I think the place was called petland). Obviously that was in the 90's before they became nearly extinct from pollution. He was a really nice jet black one with vivid blue eyes. Currently I only have one pleco ( Royal pictured in avatar). Poops his body weight daily and I love him so.

I am an avid pleco fan. Over there years I have had, no doubt I'll forget some, but the list is:

Leopard pleco, sailfin pleco, hypostomus, chocolate hypo, green phantom, royal pleco, clown pleco, rubber lips, bulldog, monster pleco, king tigers, rhino pleco, blue eyed pleco, butterfly pleco, mango pleco, and my all time favorite, acanathis adonis, ADONIS pleco. Nothing like the Adonis. amazing fish. Mine responded when I talked to him- fed out of my hand.

i love plecos too. the bigger the better. it's just a beautiful thing to watch them munching away happily on a cucumber. i've allways wanted to do a pleco tank, but the ones i've seen in my area that i really liked were just too expensive. now that i have the room and tankspace, i was thinking about getting a panaque to put in my tank with senegal bichirs. any suggestions or warnings?

aquaoahu
10-16-2005, 7:08 PM
Once you get bitten by the Pleco bug, it's hard to stop obtaining as much as your tank and/or wallet allows.

I recently picked up a Gold Nugget from a local hobbyist. They're illegal to import to Hawaii along with many of the exotic plecos (retarded law). The dept of agriculture never enforced the law until recently and so every LFS has got nothing but bushynose, sailfins, and on occasion, royals.

Any thoughts, experiences or advice about which plecos are good to have with other plecos AND/OR loaches & botias? I would like to have another type of bottom dweller with my royal but I know that sometimes a fight can break out. Hate those pesty nipped fins!

AlaskaJammin

I might try a scarlet pleco if you can get your hands on one. I have a 14 incher in my tank, and a 12 inch spotted royal in my 210 gallon with my black aros, and they never seem to fight. I have a lot of bog log, and the royal spends more time on the glass, while the scarlet mostly huffs up food on the bottom. Ive kept quite a few plecos, always more than one to a tank, and ive never really had any serious problems. Just provide lots of hiding spots. Only problem I ever had with mixing bottom feeders was an albino marble horned pleco that liked to suck the slime coat of of my endlicheri bichir.

Too bad you're gonna feed them out. I have over a dozen in a 650gal. Mostly the standard dark morphs. I also have three albinos mixed in with them. The color contrast really sets off the shoal.

Sorry for the derail from the pleco topic.

AWAK.

I wouldn't say I'm a Pleco fanatic, but just got myself two Golden nuggets and am looking forward to growing them out.

I have caught the plecotitus now and I bought a Sultan pleco today, the best fish purchase in a while and does anybody know how rare those are? Ive just never seen them before. It was cool because I was gonna buy a queen arabesque but then saw my little sultan tucked away in a corner. :naughty: :clap

I love Plecos, but for some reason, they always seem to die on me. I usually get about 1-2 years out of them and they die on me for no reason. They longest I've ever kept one was 5 years. :( I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Everything else lives. How long do plecos live anyways? I've always wondered that and no one has been able to answer that.

might be feeding. I'm never sure if my pleco really eats well because i don't see him eat. I throw some algae wafers and i notice he cleans up well (pvc pipes are clear of algae because of him). Algae wafers are gone the next day when i check on the tank so i assume he eats, but can't be sure. :(

I used to think plecos were a bit on the ugly side but thanks to my bf I have come to see their true beauty ;) . I have had a bushynose pleco for a good 2 years now and I recently aquired a gold nugget and an emporer that petland sold to me for $6.99 as a striped rapheal catfish! HAHAHA! Soon I'll be getting a female albino bushynose and a brazilian royal. I think royals rule. I'd also like to aquire a snowflake and a queen arabesque. My emporer seems quite messy (poops a lot) but it come with the territory :) Why is it so easy to get addicted to plecos?

WOW!! I've been a member of plecofanatics.com for some time now but these pics on this post are amazing! Never seen any that large! Great pics! I have a 125 thats mostly plecos, i currently have 3 royal plecos, 6 clowns, 2 tigers, 2 king tigers, 1 leopard and 2 that i'm trying to identify, i have a small one i think is a snowball and a 7'' that i'm not sure of, its dark with white spots. Would post a pic but not sure how to do that. My favorites though are without a doubt gold nuggets, i recently lost 3 of them that i kept for over a year, they match the zebra as far as looks i think. Also had a peppermint pleco too. The main thing with all the fancy plecos is to check out their stomachs before you buy one, sunken do not buy! I just put a large carrot in the tank and their already swarming it. The royals are especially fond of cucumbers, zuchinni. I used to worry about fouling the tank but there consumed before it has a chance to. Not all are veggies though, the tigers and goldens are more into bloodworms. I plan on purchasing zebras sometime in the future and trying to spawn them, just want to make sure i get the true zebra as i've been told there are some that arent the same aka cheaper price, i've seen them at lfs for 25 $ but i woudnt think there the same kind. I do know that there habitat in the wild is being destroyed, i guess that would be the reason for the high cost. If anyone has had any success with buying them online please let me know.

My family spends a LOT of time in costa rica at a scientific research station, and we got permits to self-import some when I was, like 7. We brought in a sackful of zebra fry (that is, about 10), a mango and gold nugget, which crossed. We got a royal from a brazilian guy ( we traded him a dovii). Also, some assorted plecos. In the market, incredibly rare plecos that would go for like $500 here are sold for 100 colones per kilogram (100 colones is about a quarter) for the purpose of plecostomus soup. This a nasty practice by the way, which involves cooking them live. We once knocked over a just-starting pot with 5 or 6 good sized mangoes swimming around.
Their progeny live on. :woot:

since then, by the way, we have gotten more through tradong out our zebras. Our cardinal rule is never sell, we only trade or give away.

Be afraid-Bevery afraid! Thats awesome:headbang2
