After seeing all the nice pictures on the internet of 2-3 gallon mini reefs. I got motivated and started one for fun. I got the Tom's deco kit with the 18 watt Pc light. Pretty new to this, so any advice, tips or pics would help. So far I would say the torch and finger coral was a bad idea, but they looked really beautiful and Small at the lfs till I took them home. So more changes to comes. Been up and running for about 4 weeks now. Only inhabitant is a banded shrimp.

the acropora wont survive in a nano of that size.. The light isnt strong enough

Can it survive with if I added another 18 watt lamp...? If not I was going to trade it for something that stays small...

I don't see any acropora in there.. The most trouble you are going to have is rapid salinity and other chemical changes due to evaporation. Just due regular water changes and try to keep all chemical levels the same at all times. Of course make sure you top it off everyday with fresh water bro. Nano can be a pain in the donkeys most stinky orifice.

Yeah so far, I'm doing weekly water changes and toping off with fresh water. After Every water change, it takes them a day or so to open up again. It that normal?
But so far they seem to be thriving, and nothing died, thinking about adding a clown fish...

is the stag acropora?
or is that not staghorn?

If you match the water as closely as possible to water in tank they will not stress like that.

Do you have a larger SW tank?? I change a cup or to out my larger tank and exchange for a couple cups out of nano. Every Day!!

If you add a clown it is small for a clown for life(evn for percula or ocellaris) and he will probably rub on the torch coral using it as a suragate anemone. Eventually killing it.

Yeah because of the fact he said it was small at the LFS but big in his tank makes me think its def a soft coral. And yeah more then likely some type of leather.

Okay just a few updated pics. Got rid of the finger coral and added a Rio 50 powerhead on a timer to come on 6 hours a day. still no fish. having more fun with this than my 30 gallon.

Hi, i was wondering how much a setup like this costs? I'd love to have a pico as a beginner tank for SW.

Thanks

Lol I was thinking about setting up a pico and instead of water changes on it hook it up to a larger tank that is more stable and do the water changes for the big tank instead of the pico. That way everything stays much more stable. It would be like a refugium except the other way around lol.

Love the pico man,

i have a half gallon myself :)

for whatever reason these little tanks have always captivated me more than any of my larger tanks.

any plans for a lighting upgrade? even a second 18w PC would probably make the colors pop quite a bit more....

guess i have to put pics of my pico up here..... :P

Kool, my tread was revisited, well My pico has upgraded to a 30 gallon reef with a 10 gallon diy sump. Wanted to stay small but it just got very fun and wanted to add more and more stuff. Some updated pics...
