Well, I was cruising the tide pools here in hawaii looking for a bandit coral shrimp for my small 5 gallon tank the other day and saw a large octopus but he got away. Today I did the same thing and to my surprise, I saw another octopus and cornered him into a shallow area. I caught him and now he is in my 60 gallon tank by himself. I'll put some pix up later

They only live for about a year, then their life-cycles are done...
Great Cuttlefish, octopus, squid site.. basically any cephalopod you can think of attaining, people have had them for years.

Awesome, hope you learn something from it. What species is it? you keeping or returning?

www.Tonmo.com (http://www.Tonmo.com)Actually this is a day octopus, they live only for two years. The one I caught layed eggs, so I'm taking it to a friend and the kona hawaii biology lab so they can hatch them out.....also, after a lot of deep though I decided that I am glad I did catch her considering they they are prey for just about everything here in hawaii....morey eels, sharks, large fish etc. And have a horrible mortality rate when young so maybe we can boost the population up a little by raiseing them at the natural lab. I dont have a big enough tank with the PROPER filtration to keep one for long...a 60 gallon WD filtration would only accamodate the girl till I get him to the lab. ANYHOW, HERE'S SOME PIX OF THIS LARGE GIRL IN MY 60 GALLON.....48x15x15....I took them last night. She wasny happy so I'm glad I'm giving her up to a good cause....ALSO, octopus females DIE after giving birth....so I'm not sure how old she's gunna actually make it:cry:

Well, from head to tail she is about 3 feet or so......I am getting her ready for the 20 minute ride....they NEED plenty of oxygen and VERY claen water so I gotta get my car converter for electrical sockets hooked to a air pump and some air stones........dont wanna loose anything eggs/octo on this trip....it would be a major bummer. If I do decide it KEEP one, it will have to be a small one from her. I think I'll name it " Dr. Octogon " or Doctor Octo for short. Well, these are going to be the last pix of her you or I will get to see. I going to take her there now, my buddy says everythings ready.

just make sure you keep the tank tighty closed with all holes covered, even the smallest cause they are known to be escape artist and fit throught the smallest holes.

they are THE Escape Artist! Our aro's mere apprentices, compared.
Also the most intelligent animal you can have in your tank..will not live long in there, no matter what...
Enjoy it and than release it Mistire.:)

Anything bigger then a US quarter and it can go through. The opening has to be bigger than the size of it beak.

beautiful. yes i have heard that they die after giving birth, they dont eat while their babies are forming, they just sit there and guard them and by the time the eggs hatch the mother is too weak to catch food and falls prey herself. nice pictures of her, this is the first time I have seen pictures of a day octopus she is absolutely gorgeous. and also, thank you for supporting a better cause.

I had a O. vulgaris 20 years ago that laid eggs in my tank. She would take fish and shrimp from my hand, but wouldn't come out of her cave. She tended the eggs constantly swirling her tentacles around them. Unfortunately, the brine shrimp didn't hatch when they did and of course she died a week or so later. It was very cool to watch the baby octopi jet around the tank.
When they mate, the male deposits a sperm packet in the female's mantle. She keeps it until the water conditions are right then breaks it and fertilizes the eggs. Go figure, the right water conditions were in a tank with crushed coral and just an UGF.
