I'm going to try to breed my green terror with my convict. The green terror already laid eggs but they are pretty much all gone. I put them in a 10 gal and now the female green terror is constantly bugging the convict. Is this normal? Is this something that they do when mating? Is a 10 gal too small to mate a 5"convict and a 3.5" green terror

Of all the many cichlid hybrids I've seen/heard of interbreeing, I've yet to hear of a GT or oscar hybridization. And believe me, people have tried.
I don't think the 10g offers sufficient space for the fish.

i don't think that the tank is big enough for them to breed. i have a pair of convicts that have breed a few times in a 20 gallon. they are much smaller than your fish ( female=1.5 to 2 inches male=3inches) when itryed to move them into a ten gal the larger male would not stop picking on her to the point i has to split them up in order to keep her alive. and they were already paired never mind they are the easiest fish to breed

Who said anything about oscars? :D
It probably cannot be done but it sure would be interesting to see the offsrping and I would probably even buy one. Your tank is definanly to small though, I don't think GTs can even breed at that size. I would not keep a convict in a 10g let alone a convict and GT.

I've had 2 pairs of breeding GT's. Both had successful first spawns at barely 2.5" so yes, they can breed at that size. And while I've heard of cons breeding with many different species, I've never heard of a GT hybrid with anything.

Awsome...I never knew they could breed at that size.
Convicts are insane, they breed with everything thats for sure. I would like to see a convict/firmouth hybrid...I have heard it can be done but have yet to see it.

oddly, my LFS had some in when I last checked a month ago. I did not find them to be visually appealing.

Really? I would have thought they would look nice. Maybe its just because they are in the LFS, I have bought a lot of fish that did not look gret but once I got them home and used to the place they looked a lot better.

You have a female con x JD, I haven't the slightest doubt about it. Stands out to me like differentiating between a cardinal tetra and a neon. I'd wager you a hefty chunk of cash on it, if there were some readily-available means of proving it.
The irridescent marks on the gills are blatantly Female JD, and the black/yellow striping just screams JD in general.

i wouldn't bet on it
i don't care that much
it is not even my fish
i think that it looks gt x con because i have never seen any dempsys with lines of color on the gill plate
the dark stipes do look dempsy though

female JDs look noticeably different from male JDs, once you know what to look for.
check the gill plates of the females

If u guys are still talking about my fish it is definately green color which is alot easier to see in person. The body and mouth do look like a convict. It will be interesting to see what it looks like when it gets bigger. Over the past week alot more green in coming out...

i own both male and female dempsys , i know what to look for. neither females nor males get green line on the gill plate. i am fully aware of the differences in the looks of male and female dempsy

Here is a updated pic this week. See the spot under the eye and the spot at the mid section? Definately Green Terror looking. I saw Blue Acaras in the store today and my fish does not look like what was in the store. I also have a normal looking Green Terror so I know what those look like. The bigger this mutt gets the better it is looking.

I agree. It is fun, but don't we have enough species to pick from as is.
Look at the picture below. You want your fish to look like this? be my guest, But I promis people will scorn you. They did me anyways.

omg kill it.... its so ulgy
sale of hybridized fish shoudl be discouraged, who cares if the fish breed let um its fun
News last year at Aquarama was that breeders of Flower horns were disposing of unwanted fish into the waters, as killing them was thought to be taboo due to religions in the regions. certain strands were not sellable and takeing up space. Breed them as feeders! for the record I HATE parrot fish.

because its bastardizing nature. If it wouldn't generally happen in the wild, then why do it in the aquarium. I'm personally against hybrids of any kind.
Yeah, you can't sound smart trying to classify the scientific name to somebody. For insteance, petsmart employee asks you what you have and you have no intentions of listening to him BS about what your doing wrong.... SOOO you tell him you've got a Ceptopsis sp, Panaque nigrolineatus, and a Pseudodoras niger
500g pond. They shut up cuz they have no idea what you just said. If you have a parrot what can you say....... I've got a parrot. Then they go ok did you know.... do you have..... I would suggest.... Then you say go to hell you :swear: in a classy way cuz you don't want to screw up relations with the only store that sells guppies for feeders in a town with 400,000 people in it.
Point in case. I eat fish but don't mess with their geans.
BTW inbreeding past F7 is taboo. F4 is frowned apon. F2is ok. F0 I'll buy from you anyday!

measurment of generations. F(0) can be explained as wild but generally means two non-related fish breeding. F(1) describes the first inbred generation. ie... we had F0 that bred, there fry would be F1 being first generation. If two from the f1 generation were bred together they would produce F2 spawn. Generations also go diagonally as with guppies which are typically bred daughter with father or F0xF1 spawn would reproduce next generation down so F2 would the their children. It's important that we measure these things so we don't have weak genes like Angels, Discus and soon to be oscars (I guarentee it)
know I get it !!! kinda like with dog's double breed (father/daughter). inbreed (brother/sister). double inbreed (father breed to an INBREED b@#$h)..... thanx's   :nutkick:

Dogs inbreeding is just wrong. Mammels shouldn't be inbred
Dogs inbreeding is just wrong. Mammels shouldn't be inbred
that may be but what about the term running a tight bloodline when dog's of one blood line run low?? don't get me wrong new blood is crossed in and crossed back out for health and tempermant reason's but mostly double breed (father to daughter..

BORING! dogs are a man made animal so I guess whatever floats your boat. Most dogs life a pointless life eating ground up discarded meat where children pull their ears and parents hit them for things they have no control over. Dogs that impress me are the ones that come from the pound and have every blood line there is. Even better are wolfes, fox, coyote, dingo... you get the picture. natures TRUE champions are better!
i started feeding a fox 2 nights ago now theres 3...... my dog was running aroudn with them- they were like playing tag should i not let them do this? my yellow lab is a tied up female yellow lab about 18in tall and 30in+ long i didnt see any aggressive behavior shes alot bigger and these foxces are like tiny... like less then a foot tall and even shorter then 14in?
and hey i grab my dogs ear flaps, i love frolicking and playing with my dog

you don't want your dog to get rabies. it is easily spread by saliva. you can not even test for it with out removing the head of the subject

again i say do more to discourage hybrids....!!
as an aside, yes seeing wild foxes is very cool... but feeding them is a no no... they are more than capable of fending for themselves... and, the rabies thing is a very real concern...

if u stop feeding the foxes and they keep coming back they might attack your dog.......also i dont see why hybrids are a problem.....new species are new species how do you kno that it doesnt occur in the wild i'm sure different fish cross paths with other species in nature.....as for inbred i feel that is a concer because the fish become weaker and poorer health as u reach differnt f levels like stated before
