I was wondering what would be good to go with my ATF? I have a 100 gallon tank and I want something to go with him that he might let live and won't hurt him as well? :feedback: Thanks

I wouldn't recommend any too aggressive as juvenile ATFs aren't good at defending themselves against truely aggressive fish. You could go with african peacock cichlids, Frontosas, bichirs, synodontis cats, if you want to keep it african. If you don't particulary care about regionalizing, severums, geophagus sp, gouramis, barbs, etc...

african cichlids, yeah. I hope you realize the atf will outgrow your tank eventually...

I did notice that he has it in a 100g tank, but didn't want to start in on the tank size thing. I hope for the sake of the ATF, there are realistic plans to upgrade to at least a 360g standard demensions, or it won't matter what tankmates you put in with it because you'll to lose it anyway.

rayman, aros, gar, etc... can only be added if the ATF is already a decent size because these other fish are quick growers. They will outgrow and harass, or kill and eat the ATF eventually.

You could sell him when he gets too big. If we all stocked our tanks according to the max size of our fish, we wouldn't really have much of anything.

'Noob' question here: When we are talking ATF, are we meaning Goliath or Vittatus? If it is Goliath, what in your guys' opinion is minimum tank size for Vittatus?

Should be vittatus....

I don't think anyone has a confirmed pce of goliath...

Vittatus? I've seen fish keepers in taiwan keep a 2ft specimen with an aro in a 4ft tank... i guess a 6footer should suffice...

2' in a 4' tank? maybe only for pictures, but I couldn't see that working for long.
Here's a few pics of my true Goliath and Vittatuses

They can get aggro as they bigger (12"+), but not usually too bad. The thing is they all have different attitudes. Most aren't bad, but if they decide to that route they can inflict serious damage quick!

Yes, they are challenging at best and can be downright frustrating if the set up isn't just right (tank size and tankmates are the usual problem). I'll tell you though, when you get it right, they're hard to beat as far as ferocity in the hunt, speed and general appearance.

yea...

i loved the way it could just capture your attention in the tank.
Like your very own great white. And the speed the fella takes its food is really amazing.

Damn.... feel like getting another...

The guy I got this one from says he has had vittatus before and he thought this one was aa true goliath,,he said he got it from George at sharkaquarium and it was sold to him as goliath.I'm not saying ti is but he sure is a gorgeous fish. His speed is blinding when he is really hungry.I had a couple of pleco's and 2 cory's in there with him and now all that is left is 1 cory and the rainbow has survived(for now). This guy is a wonderful fish to watch and a complete pleasure to own.i want to get a bichir to go with him and I might get a TSN later.ATF'S are very cool fish and I hope and pray that this one will be with me for along time. :headbang2

for Goliath? consider a well-heated lake in the long run.

I know Red Tail Cats get along with them. Granted, the catfish will always hide when the light is on but he will also help clean up after the atf.

or failing that, simply outgrow and eat the ATF :D
