Hi all, second time poster. I'm looking at making a non-stnadard shaped aquarium for my wife for our anniversary, but so far, i can't determine an accurate conversion factor for cubic inches to gallons. I could go from cubic cm to liters to gallons, but that's a lot of rounding and more conversions than I'd like.
Based on what people say their tank dimensions are compared to capacity, I generally get around the 215-230 cubic inch to a gallon, but that's a pretty wide window for calculating volume. Does anyone know the accurate volume to capacity conversion?
i think one cubic foot = one gallon. i'll check for you tho
nope
1 (cubic foot) = 7.48051945 US gallons

i convert the inches into feet by dividing by 12 3 times,
then i multiply by 7.5,
then i know just about how many gallons it is.

A simple rectangular aquarium formula is:
Length X Depth X Height (all in inches) / 231= Volume in US gallons

i think he has a weird shapped tank. So LxWxH /231 might be quite hard for him

Yeah, but I'm pretty good at geometry, so the 231 is what I was needing. I can calculate the cubic inches without TOO much trouble. now it's just deciding on the final shape. i'm thinking of a tilde shape. like ~ if looked on from above. or possible a bowfront, but on the sides and back making "protrusions" like small 4" fishbowls extending from the side for simulated "caves". Thought that might give some of the fish a "hidey-hole"... Several months left, so no big rush (yet), but I'll definitely keep you guys posted. :)
