Ill just put pics of what I have done from beginnin to end.

Now all I have to do is sand down the polyester, put the topcoat on and put reinforcing bars on the outside...

and then let water cycle for a REALLY long time

you're a big fella lol. Nice tank. What you gonna stock it with? Please tell me its snakeheads

You know it has ofcourse crossed my mind to stock with snakeheads... but well seein as im still quite the beginner with monster fish I have a stock growing out for it right now.

1 ornate bichir
2 senegal bichirs
3 oscars
1 golden nugget pleco
1 clown knife

and the last fish i will add are a synodontis angelica catfish (getting it froma friend... its already like 40cm :>)
and a lapradei or endlicheri bichir if i can find it....

At first I was planning to add 2 emperor snakeheads cause my lfs has a bunch quite cheap. but then my friend bought me a clown knife and well that made it so there was no space anymore... but maybe ill sell my oscars eventually cuz they are little territorial ****s and ill get the snakeheads after all...

as for my other tanks I am going to breed some channa gachuas, bleheris, or orientalis in my 55 gallon...

From the scrap wood I had left from this giant tank I have already decided to build a paludarium and Im gonna try to breed some mudskippers....

Dimensions? Gotta be odd to get to 310g. Im thinking 72x32x31?

Im not in inches... its 180cm x 75cm x 85cm

its quite wide... i like tanks that give the fish space to hide out of site... kinda makes it cooler when u do get to see them :>

The tank looks great and I cant wait to see the pictures of it stocked. Makes me jealous!

it starts with jealousy... it ends with a beautiful project....
When i joined monster fish keepers i couldnt believe my eyes... i had no clue that people actually had tanks of this size
after lookin all these crazy fish i couldnt stop myself... i didnt want some dumb LITTLE cichlids... i wanted monsters! so i started this project, To tell u the truth i didnt even really think out where it would go or anything I just knew i had to make it work...
and im so excited to see it finished... and i must say i am seriously impressed with wat i have made so far... i really thought i would mess it up... but it looks awesome, its sturdy and yea its just a great project... i suggest everyone builds their own tank this way... watever the largest size u can fit somewhere is... just build it... its so worth it...

This weekend I finished the inside of my tank. Picked up the piece of glass and started building the support frame on the outside.

2 more weeks and i think it should be done.

well the tank atleast... then i still need to put together the canopy and the sump... but thats small stuff compared to the tank and the stand.

dude... i aint much of a carpenter. Im just over doing it all
wasting a bit of money here and there for extra support. Notice how much wood i put into the stand. and the fact that i put an extra sealing layer of resin in all the corners to ensure it was sealed... im still planning to put silicone in the corners even though they are already sealed... just to be safe. I also put/putting that little frame on the outside to ensure the walse to bust open. u dont have to be a genious to make one... u just need common sense and experience with tools...

so i picked up the tank that will soon be transformed into a sump... Its big... its a tank that alot of people would be quite happy with as their main tank... so its gonna b quite the filter

I got 2 Endlis that are like 8 inches or so... they are awesome...

SO for all of u who keep asking what this tank will be stocked with... this is what ive got so far in my tanks

2x P. Endlicheri
2x P. Senegalus
1x P. Ornatipinnis
3x Oscars
1x Clown Knife
1x African Brown Knife
1x Golden Nugget Pleco

Fish I still want to get:
2 P. Endlicheri Congicus or 2 P. Teugelsi
2 P Weekssi
3 Cichla Ocellaris or 2 Datnoid Pulchers
2 P. Afer Knifes

But ofcourse they wont all go into the same tank... i need to figure out the bestr setup for them

Im thinkin in the 310:
the Congicus/Teugelsi, Endlicheri, Cichlas/Datnoides, Ornatipinnis and CLown knife, P afer knifes

but that is If I can even find the Datnoides... Otherwise Ill put 2 or all 3 Oscars in too... but chances are Ill end up selling the Oscars

Then for the smaller 55:
Senegals, Weekssis, Brown Knife, Golden Nugget Pleco

Ill for sure keep you posted... In fact ill let yall know my dilemma of the day...

Ive been workin my ass off to get this tank done before the summer because im off to the states for like a month...

But now it looks like it will actually be done even sooner than i thought...
I leave June 25th and come back July 30th...

And as u can imagin I really wanna set it up... but it seems a bit pointless as my fish wont be with me over the summer... theyll b babysitted by a LFS...

It sucks... i wanna see my fish in it!

This is a PVC quick clutch or sumthin... Im going to mount these on the bottom of the tank so that my overflow pipes dont stick out a lot on the bottom... this make its easier to place on the stand and move it around.

Yea haha I know wat u mean... and I woke up this morning realizing I might have a problem. The tank fits through the door of the room it needs to go into with just a few centimeters to spare... but now the overflow pipe extentions are sticking out of te bottom... im gonna go measure it in a min and hope its still ok... otherwise ill have to remove the door frame :P

Ok nevermind its still ok :)

Anyway so today I was feeling kind of useless waiting for the silicones to dry... It suddenly hit me... Im practically done! just needa make the canopy and decorations and the sump. SO today I went and bought a bunch of styrofoam. I HAVE A GIANT BLOCK OF STYROFOAM! what i plan to cut out of it is not ur average wall piece... Im making a well its hard to explain
its basically sort of a cave/tree combined in one which will cover the left overflow pipe.
just wait and see

haha word that would be cool... but i dont think i can compete wit some of the fishy celebs on here
like johnptc... nuthing beats that arapaima gigas of his...
But yea the dimensions r pretty sweet... real stressfull for the ground though... luckily i live on the bottom floor of a indrustrial style building with concrete floors and no basement...
if i ever have to move it though ill have to do some serious reinforcement...

Its kinda hard to tell wat it is... basically its this corner piece with 2 caves ontop of eachother and then on the one side theres a tree logged inbetween the rocks... not somethin u wud see in real life unless the tree was fossilized... but i had the image in my head and i had to do it...

After cuttin up all this styrofoam i notice my finger going kinda numb but i figured it was just cuz i was grippin the knife hard. Anyway after a while i notice it getting more numb till i realized my whole thumb down to my rist had no feeling in it. Being a biology student I start thinking what cud cause this. I finally concluded that since styrofoam and polystyreen glue have glass fibers in them they probably made microscopic cuts in my skin allowing the chemicals from the glue to leach through... numbing my finger... (later on my whole hand went numb)
It was numb for almost 2 days...

lesson learned: either wear gloves or wash ur hands really well after workin with these things...

hurricane_redbone
05-16-2007, 6:08 PM
So i finally finished exams.. hope i passed... we shall see
so this weekend i got back to my tank.. i finally got someone to help me turn it back the right way up after puttin the glass in. it was excited to see if the overflow pipes would fit nicely through the ply on the stand and if there would be enough space for the screw on attatchments.... and as you can see it worked out perfectly. the glass and all the silicone is all on nice n solid... technically the tank is ready to get its top put on but i am waiting with that cuz i first wanna finish my styrofoam cut outs cuz i needa place them in and out to make sure they fit nicely around the pipes...
the pictures show the results up till now... i how now that ive put the pieces together its clearer what the styrofoam is supposed to be...
on the left there is a tree petrified into a hunk of rock that is making up a 2 layers cave. imagination is great :>
I still need to put a small layer of styrofoam to cover where the pipe runs through and then its ready to get weighted, cemented, painted and sealed.

next week its time for water testing so wish me luck and keep ur fingers crossed

Cool idea on the foam, looks like tree roots.

I like what you done, maybe not the overflows, I think i would have used bulkheads for that, I know its wood and what not, but i think that *might* leak after i while, however i REALY do hope not.

thanks alot... it looks like tree roots... cuz well thats what its gonne be :>

but yea i was afraid of leakage aswell but thats why i decided to go totally nuts on silicone... empied like 3 tubes on it.. did it in layers too so that if for some reason one would break then it still have lik 8 more to work through
i dont think it will leak but only time will tell...
if i do notice a leak... well then i have one hefty water change on my hands :P

but why do u think it will leak?

well this statement got me thinkin... i really dont want it to leak... so i went nuts and added another few layers of silicone on it... i think itll b alright... i mean theres SO MUCH silicone holding it in place that it really has a lot of elasticity.. it would take alot of push and shove to get it to leak.

I just want to say though, anybody who plans on building a tank... prepare for ALOT of frustration. Im so close to being done yet so far... Now its time for all the little things and got those little things are annoying and time consuming.... it really makes you want to cut corners... but with 1200 liters of water u really do not want to risk it...

I JUST WANT IT TO BE FINISHED!!!!

[QUOTE][/but yea i was afraid of leakage aswell but thats why i decided to go totally nuts on silicone... empied like 3 tubes on it.. did it in layers too so that if for some reason one would break then it still have lik 8 more to work through
i dont think it will leak but only time will tell...
if i do notice a leak... well then i have one hefty water change on my hands :P

I am sorry about saying i think it might leak and adding more work for you to do.

Its just I would hate you to have a leak, I did when I did my 500 gallon and it sucked.

I would have drilled the tank, and sealed the tank, and the open hole, then bought a 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 inche bulk head and screwed it in, so you have a nice clean rubber gasket on the sealed side of the tank.

The silcone should hold but no way of knowing untill its, needless to say, to late.

Adding sillicone on top of cured sillicone really isnt the way to go. It doesnt stick to itself. All silliconing should be done at the same time and finished befor it starts drying.

Im not really doing it to stick to itself.. its more so that it forms layers... the layers may not stick to eachother but itll kinda be the same as putting a fish in 2 plastic bags for transport... u poke a hole in on n ur bag wont lose water...

If you look on page 6, you will see the top of my tank. it has 6 holes in it so light can come through and feeding but still maintaining the strength of a cubic structure. but I was thinking that If i ever need to put something large in the tank or maybe when my fish are bigger and i need to pull a fish out for some reason, or the worst nightmare, catching a fish that doesnt want to be caught; it might be nice to have a larger hole at the top so i can have more freedom especially in chasing the lil bastards to a corner. so heres my question:
___________
|___|___|___|
|___|___|___|

If this is the tank ^, what would have the strongest structure if i cut one of the bars away to make a larger hole.

option 1:
___________
|___|.....|___|
|___|___|___|

option 2:
___________
|___|_______|
|_______|___|

I think 1 is the best way to go, what do you all think?

did the first part of test filling today
its just over a quarter full, so like 8-90 gallons or so. and it hasnt showed any leakage signs in the last 3 days. I wanted to put more in today, but im not going to untill I have the styrofoam to go under the tank, and for some reason the shop was closed today so im not too happy...
but atleast im leak free up till now

For those of you who are interested... heres a few update pics...

some pics of it filling wit water and a pic of the styrofoam cave thing all glued together... and cemented over...

theres a pic in there of the tank being dry again... which doesnt seem like a big deal but it is to me cuz it took me like 2 hours to get it empty..

this weekend ill put the styrofoam under n fill it all the way...

ok well i had a bit of a delay on some stuff
my dad threw a fit cuz i made a mess of the garage and smashed my styrofoam creation... so i had to stick it all back together and now im repainting it...

I buildt most of the canopy today... i didnt make pictures because its rather boring... just look at my stand and picture it smaller... ill b finishing it tomorow cuz its raining now and ill paint the inside with latex. I will then finish the last touches on the tank and sand it all down and paint the outside aswell... the tank will have the beautiful white color :S
watever i dont care how it looks aslong as it works and the paint is needed for water protection. once its all painted it will be going into storage for the next month untill I am back at which point I will immediatly fill it and start cycling water ( still need to build filter but ill find time for that somewhere...

the other good news is I scored a stickY! did yall see :>
yea im a gangsta!

Wow man, I cant believe how similar our projects are... I've been building a similar (but smaller) tank... with a styro background as well. The build thread is here: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=110933 if anyone is interested. :p

Good luck with it. I didn't use polyester because I'd heard some mixed stories about it's use underwater, but it IS used in boats, so I didn't ever get an answer to whether it was OK or not. (plus I got a bunch of epoxy for free). I hope it works out for you, polyester is much cheaper than epoxy... I could start building a MUCH larger tank with polyester soon if I ever find literature to confirm it's fish-safeness.

as far as i know its safe.. i checked with a big custom aquarium/pond company and they said theyve been using polyester for their bonds for over 40 years...
also most of those prebuilt ponds are made of polyester...

Ok so some of you may be wondering whats going on with this project as i havent posted in a long time. Ive been on a well deserved vacation and havent been worrying bout my fish as they are in the hands of a lfs. I will b returning home on Tuesday the 31st of july at which point I will immediatly fill up my 55 gal and my 80 gal. These will house my fish for the remaining time until my big tank is done. It has been sitting half full for over a month now and my mom has been checking it daily for leaks and it is still leak free. I think its safe to say i can continue to finishing the tank. which will involve painting the ouside and the canopy inside, mounting lights and screwing the canopy on top. after that i will buy filter media and put together the sump. as for the fish I will be keeping. I have made some small changes.

I decided that since i actually started this hobby because i loved snakeheads I figured why not keep more snakeheads. SO my three oscars will not be staying. If anybody would like them I am getting rid of them for a very decent price. and remember they are probably the most gorgeously colored oscars ive ever seen.

My 310 gal wil only be holding the followinbg fish.

1 P Ornatipinnis
2 P Endlicheri
5 Channa Marulioides
1 Chitala Ornata (Clown Knife)
1 Catfish (probably a Juruense)
and I am still debating an arowana
I may be able to get a african arowana... if not ill get a black

You may be wondering what ill do with the rest of my fish. my 55 gal will house these:

2 P senegalus
3 Blue Loaches
3 Clown loaches
and ill prolly get some other smaller species of polypterus
im thinkin weekssi and palmas

expect the tank to be done halfway through august... and on its way to be stocked by the end of the month when it is cycled.

its this type of plywood with a teflon layer so its water proof. they boxes for mixing cement in with it and the teflon stops the cement from binding to it. it means u needa do a lot of sanding though to get that layer off but its strong stuff.

downset: thanks for the kind words. and no we are not touring the states yet.. thats still just a little too expencive for our bookers...

so heres where its at so far
full of water, filter is not running yet but its holding the pressure :>

the lights work everything works
the pipes will b attatched for the filter tonite and then the water will b flowing
going to hang a net in the sump to catch all the floaters and then some filter media to catch random dust n saw dust. then ill empty it
and fill it again... put in filter media and let it cycle
my fish r gonna b so happy with the size of this thing

ohh its worth the effort im sure but the way i see is theres probably so many headaches involved that i might as well make it as big as I can...but then it wont fit the 29"doorway to the basement.
