View Full Version : Problem feeding my Royal pleco
My problem is I've got a Synadontis Eupterus Catfish in my tank who is very fast and eats all the algae wafers. My royal hasen't even flinched and the wafers are gone because the synadontis ate all the food.
Any sugguestion...

Royals are wood eaters. Put a bunch of driftwood in there.

Royal plecos graze on wood, but it is not the primary source of nutrition. Algae wafers are not the best for these fish. Instead get a zucchini or cucumber, and cut it in half length wise. Drop this in with a stainless steel weight.

Have some wood in there, but I will probably put more in. Thanks

I'll definately give this a try. Thanks for the tip.
algae wafers on the whole you have to be careful with... many of them contain more protein than anything else and shouldn't be a staple but can be used as a supplement. Your royal needs roughage anyway, there is a whole list of vegetables you could feed it in the pleco dietry thread, such as potatoes, buttersquash and courgette.

I would put some wood in, then put blanched zuccini on the wood with a rubber band, he should come sooner or later

No need to blanch, just weigh it down.

Zucchini hands down. I had trouble getting my L200 to eat. Now when the zucchini comes out he's a little character. Zips out and stays as he eats.

my royal loves peas too those you need to nuke for 10 sec so they sink and shuck the skin off. my royal will roll right over like a puppy with a pea suck in his mouth

My 2 LOVE zucchini, broccoli stalks, mango (especially my L200!) and cucumber. Most catfish (your syno) would have no interest in that kind of food because they like more protein. My Royals go nuts for it though. They'll even leave their 'sacred wood' during the daytime for mango lol

blanch it to make it softer and easier for it to eat

Lots of veges and wood.
A nice piece of market shrimp for the Syno. to fill him up first. My Synos. don't touch any veggies, they will eat a waffer from time to time. Like Penguin said, Synos. will go for the protein first.

Yes as was said go with the veggies and wood. Synos will have no interest it that, I don't use wafers as they are not all that good for herbivores as compared to veggies.

Mine has taken quite a liking to green beans
