where I lay my hat
I don't currently any salt or brackish tanks set-up. I'll be starting a brackish tank soon and have a few questions:
1. Should I use a bacteria culture from an existing FW tank and slowly raise SG?
OR
2. Start from scratch and create a new bacteria culture?

3.What's a good stadard SG I should strive to meet? (the tank will house US native killifish for the most part)

4.Whats a good brand of hydrometer and what should it cost typically?

thanks

I'd shoot for an SG of 1.005 or roughly a quarter of SW for your killis. With an SG that low, you could conceivably start with a cycled FW tank and raise your SG by 0.001 every few days or each week until you get to 1.005. Whatever hydrometer you get, make sure it is graduated from 1.000 all the way up to 1.030 or so.

If you are setting it up new make sure that you can get a hold of fish that are already in brackish i.e. monodactylus are often kept in fw in the store.. but if you are setting it up from brand new just put it at 1.015 and then go for it... remember to not over stock your tank in the beginning until you get your bacteria set up but sounds like you know that though....
