View Full Version : BLACK PIRANHA
I have 10 BABY black piranha in a 55 gallon tank. They seem to be getting along fine and not fighting. What size tank should I look to upgrade to in the future so they can all live peacefully as community fish? I have 5 tetra that get along just fine with them... I did my research too...

what research every site you get on says black piranha's will not live together..and my cousin bought 13 baby red bellys he is down to 8. there is no such thing as a peaceful piranha.. im just telling you and everyone will agree a black piranha is a 1 fish per tank or if your luck 1 pair per tank species. if you can find the research that says you can house more than 2 together post it we would like to see it.. and if you can post pics of the BP's..if they are peaceful you might have pacu. trust me if been there done that learned from it and wont make that mistake agin..

You'll find many answers that are just opinions. Keep live food with your p's first of all. I catch as many small fish I can with a minnow seine. Quarantine them for about 10 days with medicine(parasitical) . Just make sure the food will not be eyeing your fish as food. No bass, catfish etc. You will definitely need a much larger tank eventually. Like when your fish are 3" or so. How large? I started with 8 baby rbp;s. kept them in a 100 gal till they got about 4" or so. Transferred them to their permanent home of 249 gal tank. Only lost one. It was Fred- he thought this rats tail(full-grown) was a worm. Poor Fred started choking on the tail. By then, the other 7 finished off the rat. Just a alittle of the shoulder blade and hip bone left. The other 7 went to go check on Fred. Fred was then starting to tilt to his side. P's being P's, decided Fred was on his way to P heaven- so they helped him on his way! Yes, I was heart-broken.

Reds are not RHOM's and if that is what u have in time u will end up with just one they will not tolerate tank mates but their your fish and you did the research. Now would anyone like to take bets on lifespan of 10 RHOMS one 55gal please i could use the cash1

Are black pirahnas generally more aggressive than rbp's? and are they more rare and expensive?
Apocalypse

Yes. They are far more aggressive and are solitary fish. They can only be housed together in Amazon-sized aquariums. :grinyes:
If and when you are housing black piranha together, they will destroy one another in a few short weeks (if that long).
Have you noticed if they have begun to nip each other's fins? If not, chances are you are keeping pacus.
If you can provide us some images, we can assist you in correct identification of your "black piranha". :naughty:

Update here is photo my 13incher in 5x2x2 140gal , fish will accept no tankmates especially another piranha unless fish is very small and fast , even then they all usually get picked off, as an experiment i once introduced 40 red eye tetra(as past experience was good with r bellies) all were eventually picked off! the only fish that have survived to date are flying foxes, these little algae eaters are superb at not getting eaten and have been in tanks with both my blacks. Have kept blacks for three years now and am open 2 any questions or comments!

RBP's, "black ear" and yellow bellys are pretty much the only species that are community "loose pack" fish, though their is alot of contoversy that all three may actually be the same species p. natteri I have been out of the fish game for a few years now, and they may actually be all classified the same now.

It would be great if you had melanistic nattereri, very uncommon color phase.

No blacks will tolerate each other after a few months, you should start thinking of trying to sale some before you lose them all.

Rhoms school together while young, and will tolerate tank mates at a young age.. When they mature there is a VERY low chance they will tolerate any tank mates.
Like everyone else said, are you sure they are black piranha?

dude ur ok dont need too sell ur piranhas jus might need biger tank but black piranhas grown very slow and they dont eat alot i kno of ppl who have 11 black p's in the same tank and ppl on here jus tell u that u cant do it its not rite and all this other bull but u can shoal black p's and watever else its all up too u as the owner
i have had few black p's and they did tolerate tankmates...only until they are hungry enough to chop back of their body LOL
btw black ps can be together till maybe 3'' but after that it isnt really smart to unless u own a 100000000gallon pond.
NO BLACK PS will successfuly live together their whole lives, IN captivity that is.

^^ don't listen to this guy his tanks are nasty and a mess and has no idea what he's doing.
i know he is the owner and he can do what ever he wants. i don't really care what he does with these fish. if you want them all to live you will have to separate them. thats the only way to be 100% sure they all live.
i tried this about a year ago with 6 3 inch rhoms. in a 75 gallon. it lasted about a month. then one morning i got up and 3 were dead. the next day another was dead. so i divided and sold the last 2. i know there are some ppl that say with more fish it will spread out the agression. i don't think thats the problem. i think its the territories they set up.
if you want to keep them together you are going to need thousands of gallons. this is going to work and be cool for a while. i'd LOVE to see some pices of this. in the mean time i'd try to get them in a 180 gallon, 6'x2'x2' with strong filtration. also provide lots of hiding spots and cover. i'd try to also get some floating plants.
honestly its fun to try and would be cool if it lasts, but its not going to. its kool that you want to experiment tho.

dont listen to that money d kid hahaha he feeds his ps friend chicken and cooked roast. and hes telling you keeping all those blacks together is fine ha. heres the deal like everyone else has told you it will NOT WORK! sure they may get along for a week or two as 1 inch juvis maybe. but are you seriuosly telling everyone you did research! because you didnt do any. black piranhas are SOLITARY! i have 2 in 2 SEPERATE TANKS. i never even tried to put them together because i am a responsible fish keeper who does research.262075

I don't think he's coming back....lol. You guys scared him off.
If he bought them in North Carolina, most likely he's got pacu's. I lived there for a number of years and it amazed me how many fish stores over there try to sell them as piranha's.

No crap the little one I saw was like 60 bucks. so this guy had at least $600 in fish easy. That's alot of money in feeder fish.
