Anyone have any info on breeding Red Devils? What tank size? Water parameters? Anything special you have to do? Anything?

i have a breeding pair i personaly started with a male and as he come into sexual matureity he became more and more aggresive, he was about 7 inches mabey more and fairly filled out. hten i found a female of equal size, so he would not kill her, i haev a freind who put a female wihthis red devil and she was onthe floor the next morning and he head splashing all night long cuase he was attacking her so bad. tlak abotu domestic voilence. he ws able to save hte female but he has to keep them sererated with a divider and then when he is sorta displaing to her in a non agressive way he lifts up the divider. i had no troubble gettign my rds to breed. make sure they haev a save palce to lay htough, and gravel to move aroudn they liek liek that. YOu canuse a flower pot with ahole chiped out, it gives a nice proctece d and secret palce for hte fish, or big pvc pipe, i ave slate rock and an old clay pot i made in middle school. they liekto put the fry in it when there still wigglers. also be aware that any and all fish in the tank when they breed will be comstered pure evil and will be brutally attacked! even plecos, but i havea feeling my plec was tryingot eat babies so be ware. also to stimulate breeding i feed them fequentlying and amply so they feel taht they can afford ot have babies and be sucsessful, and not go hungery, and that their babes will haev plenty to feed off too. one last thingi do is raise the tempiture abotu 3 or 4 degrees it stimulates a cahnge in season slong wihthte feeding, liek spring, and their confidence in survival seems to go up and they see it safe to lay. hope this helps. i ahev mine in a 30 long, with a heater gravel slate rock and face plants to create a hidden space wehre they lay eggs, no pleco nada, jsut htem, they love it!
Iagree 1105 red devbils really are not hard too breed ..Mine always bred on slate..if you need a pleco get a gold one they will not eat the babbies.....

This has made me really happy, I thought a Red Devil pair would require a huge tank to mate… guess I am on a look out for a female Red Devil now! :D

they only require a huge tank if they are large and you don't have a divider, and you are content with letting your fish sit around with no space if you have to divide things up. Personally, I wouldn't be very pleased at all with the latter issue, but thats just my opinion.

My rds are now about 12 and 14 inches long, the male is huge! and i used to have them in a 55, and as soon as they began to breed, they ....... NEVER left the left side of my tank ( withthe exception of chasing a smaller fish to the right corner and trying to pulverize him) they dwell in about 10 gallons and liek a square of 1.5 feet. even now that they have wigglers in the 30 they only stay on the right side by the slate. i actluy have 2 tanks for them, so i move them once i wnat to grow out the babies. but i havent had that option till this bunch. but you really dont need a huge amount of room, but i depends on the animal i find the 30 long is perfect.

a 55g would be good for 1 female red devil. females get 9-10", males 12-13". You can't sex red devils though, so you're better off looking for something else.

Sure there is a way to sex Red Devils, adults at least. Males are larger in size, will have a more pronounced hump on their head and longer finnage. The vent is thin and protrudes from the body. Females are maller in size. The vent is slightly larger, round in shape and angled towards the rear of the fish.

also i beleve males have longer rear lower fin and females have shorter wider lower rear finage or is that backwards

but this guy is talking about juveniles, if he saw the adults i dont think he'd be talking about getting 3 for a 55g

Do you have any pictures? Red Devils of that size must be awesome to keep. My old Red Devil topped out at 9". Your RD's must have good genetics.

she almost certainly has hybrids, not full labiatus
glad to hear the success members are having, i have a male and a female and had eggs twice but no fertilizing was done. I however am not trying to induce breeding but rather just wanted to get my prized devil a beotch to hang with. If they choose to have some lil dudes then i will let it go and raise a few fry.
