Canister filters

I have a question about canister filters. Is the delivery head the thing that the filtered water is put back into the tank in? I was just wondering because I am bidding on one now that has a 6 foot 7 inche delivery head and I was wondering if I could cut that down in anyway? Any info would be appreciated.
