I was thinking about getting discus for my 55g tank.

If I DID get discus, would all i could keep with them diminish to tiny community fish?

what could I keep with them?

How perfect does they're water have to be? Are there are hardier more sensitive species of discus?

could I make a regular community tank if I kept something like 2-3 small discus?

a planted discus tank requires a lower temperature as it will fry most plants

as for tankmates possible, discus tankmates include :

cardinal tetras

cory's

rummy nose tetras

and rams

Discus do look great, but I dont think I wanna commit so much to them just yet, perhaps later on I'll get into them, I think I'll get something else for now.

And I agree, a properly done discus tank can look incredible, and it's mostly the look that drew me to them.

I was more hoping that I would be able to keep something more interesting with them, as despite looking great, i think they'd become a bit boring over a long period of time...

thanks a lot for the replies, if anyone would like to have a go at changing my mind, please try.

IMO the best companions for Discus would be Rams, Rummy Nose tetras, and some OTO's or a Bristlenose Pleco for algae. The Rams stay along the bottom column of the tank, Discus hang out on top. The Rummy nose act as security alarm for the Discus, as long as the rummy's are enjoying life the Discus are not suspicious and the Bristlenose doesn't chase the discus sucking on them.

Discus are not that sensitive once they are bigger than 2 1/2 inches. They were my first fish and I found them to be quite hardy. Their reproduction is amazing and they grow fast. Presently I keep 11 of'm.
Cool tankmates are also Satanoperca Jurupari or Kuhli loaches. If kept with Kuhlis the temperature has to be around 81 - no problem for plants. No plecos.

Some ppl make it seem really hard to keep Discus, just have the temp at 80-82, and lower your PH if needed. Try one Discus and if its happy by the end of the week then add more. That's wut I did and I havent lost n e Discus that way! N E wayz g/l with them!

We had a 250 tank of discus. We kept a handfull of clown loaches and congo tetras in it. It was quite spectacular. The only problem we ever had was in medicating once when we had an outbreak of ich following a power outage. It took awhile to clear up because the loaches can't take full strength meds. We didn't lose any fish, though.

yeah, if you want to get some spiny eels, like fire eels or peacock eels to go with your discus, they go together fine. You might have to watch out for rummy noses, but Ive got a 12" fire eel and a 9" reg. spiny in my south american tank with rams and apostogrammas (another good idea) and theyre all friends. The water's good because thereve been angels and others, and i got a jurapari in there, so look into it. you wont be disappointed.

Peace.

i also keep discus, i have had no problems, we have very hard water, i do about 30 to 50 percent water changes weekly. sounds like a lot, but it is a sunday routine. take a shower first, you may not have hot water left if you have as many tanks as we do!!!

i keep a school of clown loaches, and the husband through a couple of "yo yo's" small geo's. rams, and i think that is it.

strongly do not recommend rays, it's okay until they get as big as my rays, they make a dinner out of them!!!!

i keep one discus with 6 angels, 2 cory cats, 3 neons, a golden algae eater and a dragon goby. the discus thinks he's one of the angelfish. :screwy:

i think the wilds look impressive in a planted aquarium with a shoal of rummynoses or even cardinals. they're the first cichlid i've ever kept and i still have 4 of em in a planted tank. because of the plants, the temp is about 27-28C, and the discus are absolutely fine with that. they've been bred commercially for so long, imho i dont see why the high temps are required.

discus will look better in a planted tank with some cardnial tetras and they do have some plants that do better in warmer water if you can get them
