I've always loved these fish, I think they are the most beautiful cichlids hands down.
This is my first one, and also only the second time I've seen them for sale in England.
He's only a baby, I got him on friday at 2.5 inches and VERY skinny. Tiny little thing. I've been feeding him multiple times a day and he appears to have grown half an inch in a few days and fattened up a bit.
He's 3 inches now and less scrawny. On friday he looked like such a baby, like he hadn't learnt to swim properly yet, he was all over the place. He looks fine now.
My question is diet. Right now he's ONLY taking frozen bloodworms. And I've always run out. I've tried crushed cichlid gold pellets, I've tried cut up shrimp and beefheart etc. He doesn't look at anything but bloodworms.
Any of you that have bought baby p bass - what have you found to be a good diet that they'll readily accept?
Also those of you with adult peacock bass, what are they like characteristically? Are they intelligent and personable like oscars? Or are they aggressive like dovii's etc?
Btw he's a Cichla Ocellaris and he is SO, SO quick. He darts around like a fly. He's in a tank with a 6.5 inch jardini and a bigger texas cichlid. He has a good survival instinct. Those fish are not aggressive towards him, but he stays well clear of them. If either come near him he just ZOOMS around the tank, from one spot to another to another in a split second.

I would keep with the bloodworms and guppies.. Until he is 5-6 inches wich is going to happen really fast. Keep the temp high like said.. I would shoot for 84-88.. I have had 3 baby P bass all get ich and eventually die on me that is why I had to get a 7 inch temensis.. Good luck.. When i first got the baby's I was amazed at how lightning quick they are as well.

COngratulations!
Some pictures would be nice.
They do love guppies and anything live that would fit in their mouths.
I keep soo many of them though and eventually learned to feed slow sinking pellets. When they are hungry enough they will go after the pellets on their way down. Originally, I got into P. Bass fishing them with plastic worms and plastic lures on a local lake.
Welcome and enjoy your peacocks..

Live foods is the best for Cichla.
keep the temp around 82. 88 depending on the species can be to warm for more then a couple day duration.

minnows till hes smashing **** at the surface.. put one in at a time then you will have im prepped to get him on cut shrimp. ps screw frozen blood worms get live... more nutrients. and live is better and will grow faster... but then remember then it will be harder to get him off live foods. you have to get him smashing anything that hits the water then your set

These are awesome fish. I have 7 that I have raised from 2"...now they are 6-8" and getting along just fine in my 55 gal with a 10" tattoed pink guarami, 2 black koi and 2 green corys.
