I am looking to get a catfish for my 310 for cleanup duty. It needs to be a cat that does not have a huge mouth so it wont think about eating any of my polys but it needs to grow out to a size to be able to deal with a 2 foot emperor snakehead...
Im thinking synodontis because they are fat and small mouthed

i was lookin on planet catfish and found a few
S. acanthomias being the one catching my attention. anybody have any info on these? or a suggestion for a different cat?

Wow... I don't think a 2 foot snakehead will allow for a catfish that "will grow up" - You need to be looking at fully grown catfish, I would imagine!
I don't know about where you are, but in new england, people are always giving up their big cats (Syno's specifically) when they get too big for their aquarium, and when they are this size, 8 to 12 inches, they are pretty bulky. You might want to check your local stores for these trade-in's. Hope this helps.

yea i mean the snakehead will be small when i get it (they being held at the store right now) but will grow to just about 26" or so... and they are calm snakeheads... marulioides... they are pretty much the only calm large snakehead...

I think that cat is an awsome suggestion, but I would start it a little larger then the snake head/s if possible... Back when they where LEGAL here I had a giant snake head and he grew fast and was aggressive as all hell... I would want a very bulky large cat to deal with the growth rate... (sorry no experience with an emperor SH )

yea i have a shop here who gets them in at like 12 inches for only 50 bucks... well atleast the angelicus... but thats like their full size... but i know they can order the other synodontis aswell... so ill see if they can get that as big as the angelicus...

How about Synodontis notatus. Here is a link on planet Catfish:

I had one many years ago, but traded it in and regretted it. I got another about 2 years ago, and it is doing great. They don't bother any other fish. I have mine in a 125 community tank with silver dollars, Arulius barbs, T barbs, clown loaches, bala sharks, and 2 severums.

As you can see from the link, they get about a foot long, and rather beefy, so they are less likely to be a snack for your Emperor snakehead.

I live in Mass, and i can only wish that i could find a nice larger cat!!Where abouts do you live???

According to my two references, S.acanthomias can grow up to 24" so it would indeed be a good canidate for what you propose.:D

I HAVE HAD A S ACANTHOMIAS FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS. THEY CAN GROW UP TO 2 FOOT IN THE WILD, BUT NOT USUALLT MORE THAN ABOUT 13'' IN A TANK.
SAYING THAT IF YOU HAVE A BIG ENOUGH TANK 1000 LITRES PLUS THEN IT SHOULD GET TO 20''. THEY CAN HANDLE THEMSELVES AND CAN BE A BIT GRUMPY WITH OTHER CATS AND DONT LIKE PLECOS NO MATTER HOW BIG.
THEY IMO ARE BRILLIANT CATS TO GET IF YOU CAN. GOOD LUCK.
