Cool!
What do you do in the winter?
In the winter I put clear plastic over it much like a green house. Also in the picture the little green box on the hill contains a natural gas heater. The heated water flows back into the pond trough the visible 4" pipe.

I'm just guessing but I bet he dug a hole, threw in a pond liner, then put rocks around the rim of it and filled it with water. You can see the liner in between the stones.

The shiro bekko and hi utsuri are results of fish I spawned. The rest are imports from Japan.I've been to Japan three times to buy fish. Its loads more fun than going to the LFS.

I knew it! I want to get a pool and stock it with fish and go snorkeling, but my wife keeps fighting me on it.
Did you build it for the koi or was is an old pool converted? Do you use a bottom drain?
waterboy
05-25-2007, 8:45 AM
I knew it! I want to get a pool and stock it with fish and go snorkeling, but my wife keeps fighting me on it.
The two reasons I only snorkel in it once a year. 1.There is a lot of bacteria in any fish pond or tank so it can make you sick. 2.The koi are not happy about it.
waterboy
05-25-2007, 9:01 AM
Did you build it for the koi or was is an old pool converted? Do you use a bottom drain? I know it looks like all thats missing is a diving board but I did build it as a koi pond.It has two bottom drains on seperate 4" pipes feeding the vortex settlement chamber. They are getting the job done but three drains to three separate vortexes would have been better.

Just to the left of this photo about 25'-35' beyond the pond near the fence. The top of the vortex and the building housing the pumps and filters are all at the ponds water level and are hopefully hidden from view. The gas heater and heat exchanger are located in the green box on the right then gravity feeds to 4" pipe in this pic. http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w128/oldkoifish/029.jpg

In these pictures 5 of my largest koi are not in the pond. They were in a holding tank awaiting going to a koi show.I could keep many more koi in my pond (at one time I had 70) but then they will not grow as large.I try to keep only about 20 koi and sell one every time I add one.I added 7 fish this spring from my last trip to Japan so I'll be thinning the herd this month.

i like farytail type ponds and archetecture too. yours looks like it was a pool, not a bad thing just not everyones cup of tea, i like curvs and funky shapes... some peiople like the simplicity of straight lines, but if you have a pool and you dont swim why not use it as a ponr... right?

so you live in the US, but you go to japan to buy koi and bring them over? how? by plane? doesn't it cost a lot?

so you live in the US, but you go to japan to buy koi and bring them over? how? by plane? doesn't it cost a lot?
I meet my koi dealer(USA KOI.com) while he is on a buying trip to Japan. I buy my fish through him. He ships them back to the U.S., gets them through customs etc.He then quarintines them and ships them to me.It is more expensive then going to a US dealer's shop. But my wife and I love to visit Japan and buying fish is just part of a great vacation.
Heh... Koi Dealer almost sounds sinister. Like you'd meet him in a dark alleyway, and ask if he's got any K for sale.

beautiful fish! Awesome specimens. I noticed that you live in Ohio, which freezes during the winter, so with the tarp, how cold does the water get? And how much energy is used to heat the pond or the amount difference you pay in gas? As I want to build something like that in California, and its not nearly as cold here, but it does drop the the 30s at night for a few days out of a year, and I would want to know how much my heating bill will cost me :)
Best,
Wes

During the the coldest part of winter I keep the pond set at 50F.We somtimes get temps as low as -15F without big jumps in cost.I don't have it on a separate meter so I don't know what the cost is.But I sure it is less than the cost of sick fish or replacing even one koi.In California you may maintain mid 50s or more with just a good cover and a few sunny days.Go to AKCA.org and find the koi club nearest you. They could give you much better local info.

I started out disliking the square ponds, the hard corners & edges, the non-natural look. And then I realized that the elegance and sophistication they offer visually is amazing. It's simplicity that allows you to focus on what the container is for; Gorgeous koi for a man devoted to their beauty.
Props on providing your Koi such a happy environment

Yes it is very easy to take care of.Two or three minutes a day to clean the vortex and clean skimmer baskets. And a half hour or so to backwash all the bead filters once a week. The hardest part is remembering to turn off the water after refilling it!

That pond makes me think I should do more with mine. All I did was have my brother inlaw come by on his way home from work over a week and dig a hole until he hit water. Then made it bigger. It is 100' long, 60' wide, and 16' deep (in the middle goes to 0'). I thought that cattails, lillies, water hyacinths, and a gazebo were good enoug, but I guess some rock work can go a long way.

My favorite that we can see is the grey one with orange. It looks crazy.
Absolutely beautiful pond!
I recently visited a goldfish breeder/importer who also had some koi, although goldfish was by far his primary focus. When I walked inside, I knew right away why you gotta go to China or Japan for the good stock - they know how to breed them well!
I love the watergarden too, I could sit by there for hours.

Nice looking fish and nice looking pond, congrats
Nice Gallons , No creativity...sorry for the put down ....even ur avatar looks likes somthing out of Axelrod, Herbert R
books
Creativity is the fish's job. You don't need elaborate landscaping and creative shapes to take good care of your fish. :screwy:
